Weird phone call - WWYD?

Last night I got a phone call from restricted number. I didn't answer and got a voicemail from someone with a heavy Boston accent named "Marco." He gave me an 800# to call and a reference number. He spoke really fast and seemed unprofessional. I just called from my work phone and they wouldn't give me any information when I asked what kind of company it was. They just kept repeating the name of the company. I asked if it was a collection agency and he just said "It's the Allen Daniel Associates." Um yeah, I got that, but who the F are you?

I just googled the number and it looks like a collection agency. I have no idea what it's about though. The message used my maiden name. Their website is also very vague https://www.ada-collect.com/index.asp?page=about.

Should I call back and just not give them any more personal info than they already have? It's so strange.

  • I wouldn't call them back.  If they aren't willing to give you information, I sure wouldn't give them any more.

  • I would ignore it, too.  I wouldn't call them back.    If it's important they would have given you more information.

  • I wouldn't call back.  It could be a scam/phishing thing.  If they call again, maybe tell them that you are uncomfortable dealing with something so sensitive over the phone and ask them to mail you some documentation of what they are looking for. GL!

  • Yeah, based on the website I would sa it's a debt collector.  And I agree with you about not giving out any personal info aside from your name.  They should be able to verify if it's you on like the last four of your social but not the whole thing.  Also debt collectors usually send a letter first if it's not the original company (to the effect of they explain they have taken over the debt from **fill in credit card here**).  Or at least that was my experience the one time I had an issue.

  • I wouldn't call them back.  If they call again, request they send you their claim in writing.  Then, if they give you the name of the original creditor, I would call them and deal with them.  I have some medical bills that went to collections from when I had DS (4 years ago) and to this day, I only deal directly with the original creditor, not the collection agency.
  • Don't call them back, and don't answer next time they call.  DH and I have a rule, if we don't recognize the number (or think it's a telemarketer), we don't answer.  That is strange and a little scary!
  • Sounds like a scam to me. We saw a whole program about this kind of thing!

  • I got a very similar call about a month ago. They also used my maiden name, gave me a 1-800 number and it sounded like a recording. When I called back they just kept asking for my SS number which I refused to give them without further information. They were bagering me, and so I hung up. They havent called again.

  • Do Not Call Them Back

    This.

  • If it were me I would wait until they call again. I would inform them I will only communicate by mail, and that if they send a letter I will respond to that. Chances are if it is a scam they aren't going to mail anything, and if it is legit they are more likely to send a letter to collect the debt.
  • Good idea to ask for something in writing. They did give me a reference number, but I didn't give them that over the phone. I'm kind of leaning towards calling just to see who the debt is supposedly from. I do feel like it could be a scam though. Irritating.
