Pregnant after 35

When will you stop working?

For those that plan to work up until your EDD, how do you when to stop?  Obviously, I don't want my water to break while I'm at work...but do you stop when you start seeing the other signs???  How do you know?

Re: When will you stop working?

  • I have to use my sick and vacation time during maternity leave so I do plan on working till the absolute last moment possible - even if that means my water breaking at work! Fortunately, my doctor's office is in the same building and the hospital is 10 mins from work as well- I live an hour away so it would probably be better if I went in to labor whilst working. Eeek!

  • Superaunt - I am in the same boat - need to use all my vacation time and will still have to take 2 weeks unpaid, which is why I am starting to think about how long I will be working!   I work about 25 miles from the hospital so not as convenient for me.

  • I plan to work until Dec 23 (4 days before my due date). I work 35 miles from my hospital but I can't imagine things will move quickly enough that I can't get back up the road if something happens (either driving myself or having DH come get me). I will, however, probably start wearing pads around 37 weeks in case of a water break.

  • I haven't thought about it yet. I am about equadistance from the birth center and my workplace. I think I plan to work until my water breaks :)

Hopefully it won't happen at work...

  • With both of my girls I worked up to the day my water broke mainly b/c I felt really good.  This time I honestly don't think I'll make it that long plus I plan on being a SAHM after DS arrives so it might just start a little early?  I'm just feeling older, more tired and plain old exhusted by 3pm so I don't forsee me making it to the end.
  • I only work p/t, so I am not sure.  With my son I went to almost 42 weeks but I think this time we will be ending the party a little sooner.  I might want a weekish to not juggle work so I might stop 38-39ish.

    I sound really definitive don't I?!
  • I'm a one-man shop so I'll work until it's time to go to the hospital.  I'll just need to make sure I change my v-mail so that people know why I'm not returning calls asap.  And thank goodness for crackberries!

Seriously, I'm pretty stressed about coverage and keeping my practice afloat while I'm out...

  • My EDD is Monday and today is my last "official day" at work.  I estimated my date using my 6 weeks paid leave, remaining vacation/sick/personal days to take me through the end of the year.
  • I worked until 2 days before my due date- which was Oct 24th- and am actually wishing I had kept working b/c just "waiting" to go into labor is not fun.  I am in the same situation with some of the other pp's having to use my sick and personal time and will prob end up taking a week or so unpaid.  I am going back to work on Dec 23rd....

  • The company I work for has great maternity leave. In fact they don't want you there when you go into labor so I'm required to go out at 38 weeks. The first week is PTO and the second week is disability. If I'm late I just stay on disability until the baby is born. Then I can take 4 months off after delivery.  One month of that is unpaid though.

  • I think it depends a lot on the kind of job you have. I stopped work 12 days before EDD because I physically found it so hard to do my job. I felt great but my job can be very physically demanding with very long hours. It saved me early on but later....

  • Last time I stopped when my mom came to town and wouldn't let me go back - at about 39w2d.  But then I didn't have Emily til 41 weeks, so I was bored.  This time (different workplace) I have to have all of my client work moved over by 2 weeks prior to my due date, so I'll probably work from home until it's time to go to the hospital on non-client work.
  • I plan on working for as long as possible.  I have a pretty sedentary job so it should not be too much of a problem.  Also will be mid summer here and at least my office is airconditioned.

We have good maternity benefits, (4 months paid and can then take a further 2 unpaid if we want) but I would rather spend that time with the baby than sitting waiting for it to arrive. But time will tell I suppose.

Also in South Africa they won't let you go to 42 weeks - inducing at 41.
