Stupid Bakeries Vent!!

My grandmother's 70th b-day party is next weekend. My mom and aunt are throwing a casino theme party with our family and a bunch of her friends. They are going to have craps, blackjack and a roulette wheel (fun!). Anyway, my job has been to find a casino cake if I can. We always make cakes from scratch in our family so I honestly have only ordered about 2 cakes in my life.

1st bakery- They have great cake. It's my grandmother's favorite. I go to the bakery and they are completely and totally un-helpful. Not to mention last time I went there I had ordered a cake for 25 people and honestly, I think the thing could have fed about 10 (I wanted to ask if they used a cheese shaver to cut their slices). I finally get them to help me and I show them the picture of the one I want (in their database) and they say they are going to use a 12" round with a 10" round and that would feed 45 people... oh and the price....$245!!!!!! Needless to say, I was pissed and refuse to use that bakery due to lack of confidence and the outrageous price tag!

2nd bakery- I fill in an on-line request form for them to call me to discuss the cake (last week). I tell them I want the casino cake blah blah blah. The guy sends me 3 pics this morning. I go to reply back- mailbox error, it's rejected. I call them, some dumb lady answers and is yelling to the guy who wrote the email. Why can't I just talk to him? Honeslty. It was ridiculous. She said that he said that he is going to clear his mailbox and write me back with a quote but that I have to call the backery and get it from them (what the hell is she talking about?!?! if he is emailinng me a quote why do I also need to call the bakery?). Well it doesn't really matter anyway because that was over an hour ago and still no email.

Now I know why I make my cakes! I am honestly going to throw the towel in on this mess and just get a regular cake. FFS!

    You'd be surprised that grocery store bakeries can do some pretty good cakes.  I'd say go order their biggest sheet cake and give them an idea of how to design it then if it's only enough for say 30 people have them made two or three round cakes designed to look like poker chips to go with it that are different flavors.  Just an idea.  That will still be a lot cheaper than $245.

    I agree with PP.  I dont know where you live exactly but our local grocery stores do amazing cakes.  I think that the two or three round cakes made to look like poker chips would be really neat.

    If you have a Publix in your area, they do great work.

    Thanks! I just needed to get that off my chest before my head blew off! :)

    I will check out the grocery store and see.... although last time they spelled someone's name wrong. LOL. I might just get a plain cake with flowers to be honest if I can't get this cleared up by today.

    First I would like to say - a casino themed party - brilliant!!!

    First bakery - holy crap!!  That is a ridiculous price - I barely paid more than that for my wedding cake and it fed 125 people!

    Maybe you can make the cake and find some casino themed decorations for it (Michael's has a cake decorating section) or get creative with icing in a bag?  Your gram will probably love that you went to so much trouble :)

    Or a plain sheet cake that you could easily decorate as a casino cake.  Maybe put some playing cards and poker chips along with some fake money on it?

    Yeah that's what my other Aunt said. She always does too much though and then isn't ready for the party (lol- one year she served x-mas dinner 4 hours late!). My mom doesn't want us to make the cake because there is so much other stuff to do with decorating, making apps etc. This guy has about 20 minutes to get back to me before I get the other cake. Big Smile
