Does Anyone Else Think This Is Strange?

So, I went to Kaiser yesterday to get my Swine Flu shot. After my first appt with the nurse on Monday (at 4 1/2 weeks pg), she highly recommended that I get it. After much consideration, I decided that it was something I should get. So, I checked in with OB and the receptionist said that since I have not been confirmed pregnant, that I couldn't get it. I told her I had all of my labs and urinalysis done on Monday. Didn't they comfirm it then? She told me that they do not confirm pregnancy until 8 weeks when they do an ultrasound and pelvic exam. They pretty much take your word for it! They have already drawn blood and they have my pee. They could have checked. It just makes no sense to me.

Wouldn't you think that would be the first thing they do before anything else?

  • That is really bizarre. I had bloodwork Monday and she called to tell me that the pregnancy was confirmed.

  • That does seem strange to me - I didn't actually go to the doctor until week 8 though.
  • You would think that they would confirm pregnancy before anything else...  Weird.

  • I thought this was really weird too, but its the same at my doc's.  The urine is sent off for bacterial testing and the blood work checks for rubella/chicken pox immunities, general blood profile, and blood type.  They said they go off your PG test until the first u/s when they 'date' the pregnancy.  I asked about doing a beta, but they only pull those if there are issues.  They can, however, tell you're pregnant based on the blood profile....wbc and a few other things will be elevated.

  • Yes, that is strange.  They should have at least done the urine test to confirm the pregnancy so they had it on file.

  • That stinks..i mean it's fine for like other reasons to say oh well your OB hasnt' checked you out, etc...but to get a vaccine! Come on..i don't think there would be that many people just saying they're pregnant to get it. Plus, like you said they could get the pee results..WTF. I'm getting nervous and can't get mine for another 3 weeks or so, but a few people at work are coghing and sneezing and have sore throats, it's freakin me out.
  • Okay... I have kaiser too!  All you have to do is go to the place where they are giving the flu shots... tell the person who gives you the paper work that you're pregnant (they don't ask how far along you are or even make you confirm it).  On the paperwork check the box that says your pregnant and then get in line for your shot.

I got mine on Monday and was surprised that they didn't verify that I was pregnant.

I went to the normal flu shot line first and they sent me up to OB for check in. At Fontana they have the H1N1 shot in a different area than the normal flu shot and OB is the only place where you can get the paperwork.

    We are in Southern CA.

  • huh.... that's interesting.   I was in the OC for 8 years with Kaiser insurance but in June I moved to the Bay Area.  I still have Kaiser insurance but the care is different from So. Cal to Nor. Cal.  Interesting.

Email your doctor and see if she/he can get the paperwork for you.  That's ridiculous that the receptionist said you're not really confirmed until 8 weeks!!!  Do the first 8 weeks of pregnancy not count???  LAME!   Email your doctor.

I'd pick up the paperwork up here and mail it to you if I could!  Hang in there!

  • I believe what they look for around the 8wk appointment is viability, a baby with a heartbeat. Don't know why she'd say that's when they confirm a pregnancy though, as of course that can be done much sooner via blood or urine testing.
