Pregnant after 35

xp - Delaney Jacqueline's Birth Story

Thank you all for your well wishes regarding unplanned induction - I'm running on adrenaline right now so figured I better got online now while I can semi-function!

As I had indicated in a previous post, after submitting my third 24 hour urine and blood work on Sunday, my protein continued to elevate and they asked me to come back at 7pm Sunday night to start on Cervadil and then induction Monday morning.  I had my concerns as I had zero dilation and zero effacement and had a feeling this was going to be a tough go - especially since I really had wanted to go as intervention-free as possible.

So they placed the Cervadil after I was admitted and it was removed Monday morning.  They started the Pit for awhile and I was able to tolerate it pretty well - considering how uncomfortable the L&D beds are and they wanted me to stay in bed.  They started the pit out at a very lose dose.  After a couple hours, the MW from our OB practice checked me and I was only about 1cm.  But, she was concerned about some of the decelerations with her heart beat and wanted to place an internal fetal monitor.  My water broke from that and I started to have contractions on my own so they stopped the pit.  It was sooooo uncomfortable in the bed - if you are able to get up and walk around during your labor, DO IT!  After a few more hours (I want to say 2-3pm ish) they did another internal and I was only at 3-4 cm.  They kept coming in to move the external fetal monitor (Delaney was not cooperative with the placement of the internal) because she continued to have decelerations. Contractions were getting harder and harder and I was on the verge of asking for an epi, so I begged them to let me at least sit in the chair, which they did.  They did another internal and I was only at 4-5cm, and the OB decided to restart the pit.  Delaney continued to not tolerate the labor well and I asked for an epi for the pain.  The nurse checked with the doctor and the nurse, OB and MW all agreed that they needed to go ahead and deliver Delaney via c-section as she wasn't tolerating the labor well, my BP kept escalating, and it wasn't going to get any better for the both of us.  I was devestated for a moment, but the idea of getting a spinal sounded soooo good to me at this point.  Within ten minutes we were in the OR and what sweet relief that spinal was!  Another ten minutes and Delaney was born at 37 weeks, 3 days.  She was born at 5:06pm, 5lbs, 15 oz, 19 inches long.  Her apgar scores were 8 and 9.  She latched on right away and Laney and Mommy are learning the whole BF thing together.  Daddy and I are in love - and while things definitely did not go the way I had hoped, in the end I have my healthy baby girl.  Something I learned from all of the other ladies that have already had their LO's - you have to be flexible when it comes to your birth experience because you truly never know what might happen.

Will add her photo to my siggy when I can.

Your labor sounds a lot like what I went through with my 1st.  I'm glad she is going well and it sounds like nursing is going well too.

How are YOU feeling after your c-section?

Can't wait to see pics of your little girl.

  • Carla - How wonderful that she is here safe and sound.  Your birth plan is just that... a plan.  How we all know that things never go quite according to plan!  So glad you aren't upset about it.

Glad you mentioned about the L&D beds.  I thought the same thing when I was admitted for contractions.  I was like, "How am I going to get comfortable when I am REALLY in labor.

Can't wait to see pictures.  Congratulations Mommy!!!
