Eek - we are g-tube free

So at the recommendation of Isaac's endocrinologist we had his tube taken out yesterday.  He has been getting enough calories on his own that she is comfortable with us doing that.  Plus, she said with PWS we can run into the problem of gaining weight too quickly at this age - so we are switching from the not getting enough calories mode to watching what he eats mode.  Its kind of nutty.  I'm excited though - don't get me wrong!  :)

Of course now he has a big whole that has to heal - so we are buried in mountains of gauze and tape.   I'm hoping that the leaking won't last too terribly long.

Anyone out there that can give me an idea of how long it took for their LO's to heal??

  • After Matt had his ostomy taken down he had a huge hole that had to close up.  They put a wet to dry dressing on it and I swear with in a two weeks it had closed to the point of a large scab.  Took forever after that to completely heal, but no more open wound to leak.  So what I'm saying is, it really shouldn't be too long, HTH.

  • Thanks matkinson!!!  Oh wow - only 2 weeks sounds a lot better than I was expecting!!!  (well i understand it will take a lot longer to finally heal - but i mean the food coming out on us!)

It has already seem to shrink over night - which is crazy.  I guess in my head it was a different process that must have required stitches - it was such a surprise to me when she said, nope you just leave it out.  :)

  • Robbie's first one was taken out and it took right at 2w (literally 14 days) to really stop leaking. And it was almost completely healed at 6w. He even had a little granulation tissue at the time it was taken out (not much) and it went away, too.

The surgeon said if it wasn't closed in 6w, they would do surgery to close it up, but it's pretty rare to happen.

  • Yeah congrats! Kinda crazy that gears shift so quickly huh. Declan gains weight/loses weight every month. It's like a roller coaster!
