When you introduced fruits and veggies

Did you do it instead of cereal?  Did you do it in the same feed (i.e., 1 tbsp veggie and then 2 tbsp of cereal or whatever)?  Or did you do it separately, like 1 at breakfast, 1 at dinnertime?

Also, how much did you start with and did you do it before or after breastfeeding/bottle?  How immediate?

Thanks

  • I did both.  Some I would mix with cereal and others I would do on their own.  I just started with however much he would take, which at first wasn't much.  I picked a time of day, like dinner time (right after we got home from daycare) to feed him.  It was in between two of his feedings.  I treated it more like a late afternoon snack, so he'd still get most of his nutrition from his bottle, but in between he'd get fruits or veggies.

  • It progressed something like this...

First step...Oatmeal in the morning after first nap, but before offering bottle

2nd step...Oatmeal in the morning, veggie after 2nd nap (before bottle)

3rd step... Then we started mixing fruits into the oatmeal, continued veggies in the afternoon

It was a bit of trial and error. Sometimes she'd wake up from a nap and scream until we gave her a bottle, some days she could finish 2 jars of solids before taking a bottle.

  • I never mixed cereal with the fruits & veggies. DH and Daycare did though and she seemed fine with that.

It is best to introduce one food a week. I did that until E was about 7 months. After we started on Step 2 foods I just introduced as many as I could, the pedi said we could do a new one every day.

I did the say as Q at first, treated her purees as a snack until she started eating 1-2 at each feeding. We still give her a bottle after purees, just more like 4-6 ozs vs 6-8.

  • We started with sweet potatoes as the first food... and we just feed it straight - no cereal mixed in.  Now I mix in cereal when the food I made it too runny.  As for when... that's a tricky part for us.  Since DS is only awake for 2 hours at a time in between naps... we usually feed right when he wakes up... and then do the food about an hour to 1.5 hours later.  Right now we are only feeding twice a day.  GOOD LUCK!

  • We started directly with fruits and veggies at 6 months before trying cereal. DD is kind of finicky about textures and seems to like the fruit and veggie purees on their own without cereal mixed in, so I always try to offer puffs too so that she's getting a grain with every meal. I BF first, and then offer solids so that it doesn't impact my milk supply. I just started doing solids 3x/day this week. I do yogurt either on its own or with a cube of fruit or a little cereal mixed in for breakfast about an hour after she wakes up, a fruit either mixed with squash or just on its own for lunch (usually around 1-2pm), and a veggie for dinner around 6:30pm.

  • We just started this week, so I'm still trying to figure out what works for us.  I started with peas, and just opened the container, grabbed a spoon, and stuck it in his mouth.  That didn't work.  :)

So I've been doing about 1/3 spoon of pea and 2/3 spoon of rice cereal, just to make it taste a little more familiar. It might take us days to finish one container of peas.
