Family Tree craft project - any other suggestions?

I found this on One Pretty Thing recently:

Directions are here:

I really think it's a cool idea - but I'm trying to figure out if you could rework it to show siblings.  Towards the end of the directions there is a link to the diagram of who you put where.  Basically if I was doing this for Luke, I would be a big branch and Jason would be one.  Then Luke's name and birthday would go in the trunk of the tree (with the rest of his siblings.)  Then it goes on to my parents, my grandparents, greatgrandparents, etc.  What it doesn't show though is my/Jason's siblings - or my/Jason's aunts/uncles.  Some of that seems more relevant than great great grandparents.  Except doing it this way would keep both sides completely even, as both have parents, etc.  If we added siblings, then each has different numbers of it.

I had also thought it would be cool to make one for my grandparents, but again it would just be the parental type figures on it.  Their 5 kids would be listed in the trunk - but none of the spouses or us grandkids.

So any ideas on how to do something like this that maybe wouldn't go back as far, but would show more relevant people?  I'm thinking probably not and may just go this route because I think it looks cool.

  • I've seen one similar to what you're describing.  I'll try to find it again,  It was much less structured so that the branches don't look lopsided for larger families.

I love the red envelope one btw!

  • Loading the player...
  • neat idea!
  • I did a cross-stitch family tree for my ILs when their first grandchild was born.  I did it backwards - ILs are on the trunk of the tree, and then each major branch is one of their kids, and minor branches off the kids are grandchildren. I put a link to some pictures of it.  There is a lot of free space to allow for future grandkids....
