Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If you have fast letdown, do you need faster flow nipple?

My letdown is pretty quick.  I have been trying to get DS used to taking a bottle again because we will be going out of town and I know he will need the bottle every once in a while, but he seems to get frustrated with the slow flow that we are using.  Do you think a med flow would be better?  Or will it be too quick?  We are using the playtex drop-ins.

  • I would personally stick with the slower nipple. Presumably once the let-down subsides, your LO is still having to work to get milk out. I guess I'm of the mindset that you should stay with the lowest flow nipples possible until baby is showing signs of frustration. 3m is still pretty young to move up to a new nipple for an otherwise BF baby, IMO.

  • I have a very fast letdown and I switched to medium flow nipples when DS was a little over 3 months. It was much better and now he takes a bottle in 5-10 minutes instead of 20-25 plus he doesn't get frustrated at the bottle.

  • We didn't start bottles until DD was in daycare at 12 weeks.  She wouldn't take it with the slower nipples, we had to put the medium flow on for her to take the bottles at all.
