Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How much should they be saying at 16 mths?

I know, every child is different, just want some mothers who have/had 16 mth olds to fill me in on how much their child says. Aren't girls typically supposed to be saying more words than boys at this point?

Sometimes I feel like she just isn't talking enough.... I'll point to things over and over and over and say them over and over and over and she'll just smile at me. She knows what I'm talking about because I can ask where it is and she'll point, but she won't say it! Maybe it's only words she wants to say.

  • DD still mostly babbles. The words she does say - albeit not always clearly - are banana (nahnah), dog (dok), car (cok), truck (tuk), mama, dada, baby, shoes (oosh), milk (mook), hello and bye bye.

  • I wonder this too.

she says Momma (which could mean milk or her dad. lol), dada, olive (our pug), Buddha (our great pyrness), hi, and whatsdat?  She also babbbles. But she also knows her signs. More, thank you, bye, milk and can point to her belly, nose and ears.

    I wouldn't worry. : )

  • Okay. I feel like everything I read about development is like "they should have a vocabulary of 50 words..."

She doesn't say quite as many consistent words as your daughter does (love the shoes one), but I think she's too obsessed with 2 words and she just won't say anything else. She will say "pup-pups" and "balloo". That's it. She won't even say words she used to say like book, duck or milk anymore. She does sign milk, please, eat, and more.

This definitely sounds like my daughter. Minus the Olive and Buddha, of course.

  • DD has a few words--Mommy, Daddy, kitty, hi, really just basic stuff;  she still prefers to point and go "ummmmm"

  • Hi, bye, dada, baby, kitty, kiss, more, goggy (doggy), out, up, yes, no, uh oh, peas (please), gentle, all done, belly, ball, mama, eat.

ETA: She can also say "Wats tat?" (what's that?) and "More peas" (more please).

It's hard, yes Smile Not so hard when she starts to chuck her sippy at me..

  • DS seems to surprise us with a new word every day recently.  shoe, cracker, dog, horse, all the animal sounds, GO (after we say ready set), two (after we say 1), bobble (bottle), up, no, awight, hi daddy, mama, bye bye, more, aw done (all done), wasat? (what's that), nigh nigh, boo, etc.

It will happen - it seems to happen in spurts with DS.

  • LOL! I forget how much it changes when they start acting like little stinkers....
  • DS just, sort of, started talking. He only consistently says "Uh Oh!" and that has only been the last couple of weeks. He started saying Boom! the other day when DH was explaining to him what balloons do, and I think he said "Uh Oh! Boom! when he fell off the couch this morning, lol. He calls dh Da- Goon! or Danny. haha. He is also saying "done" as of yesterday. It seems to be happening fast. He tries to imitate us, but he doesn't really have it down yet. He "barks" and meows also. I was freaking out about it around 15 m, and the pedi said he just wants to see 5 words by 18 months. It will click!

ETA: He also signs for milk, more, please, thank you, eat, and all done.

  • Whew! 5 words by 18 months sounds much better than what I was finding on google!!! 5 words I can probably pull. If she's said them before, they count right?? :-D
  • DD talks a blue streak.  But at her 18 month appt. the pedi was like "does she say a dozen or so words?" in the "we'd probably as follow ups if she didn't" section so I get the impression that if your 16 month old is saying 5-12 words that you understand then you're in a normal range.
  • How could I forget shoes? That is one of the most important words to her Stick out tongue She loves her shoes and loves picking which ones she gets to wear.
  • mama, dada, this (dis), keys, shoes, please, uh oh, no, cheese, kiss, bye, and "ashes" (from "ashes, ashes, we all fall down.")

He's also identifying several letters - O, M, N, E, A, S - if I point to one of them and say, "what's that?", he'll tell me. Not sure if that counts as "words" though!
