Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If you used Ferber

At what age did you start?

How many nights until things got better??

::desperate for sleep::

Re: If you used Ferber

  • Modified Ferber at 5.5 months just to get to sleep.  Worked wonderfully starting the first night...cried six minutes and then went to sleep.  Typically was taking 2 hours to get him down.  He goes down well now!  Did not use it for middle of the night wakings b/c he often woke for something ( I still nurse at night) or wet diaper or he was cold.  Good luck.

  • We started last week.  SHe was having multiple night wakings after she used to STTN.  She was wanting the bottle, but using it as a pacifier.  She always went to bed easily.  Night one she woke once during the night and we had to CIO for the 3-5-10 interval, but that was it.   Next few nights, no night crying, just a brief cry out and then back to sleep.  Last two nights, not a peep at night and STTN.  Naps also went from 30-45 minutes max to 1-3 hours!  Worked wonders for us!

  • I'll be the outlier.  Ferber did not work for us.  We did follow it exactly, and we did not give in, and my son just never "got it."  He used to STTN, then started waking up at night (always went down easy).  We did Ferber at 5.5 months.  He "got it" for about 10 days and STTN, and then went right back to waking up and crying for over an hour even with the checks.  So....we are still trying to figure out what to do.
  • About 4.5-5 months on recommendation from my pedi. I started it Friday morning with her first nap of the day, and I noticed a significant difference that night. It took about a week to get really consistent though.
  • Thanks, that was helpful! He cried for about a half hour on and off. Checked on him several times to reassure/pat/kiss/give paci back.

    I hope the next nights won't take as long. I'm not following the book to the T, just the general idea to let baby figure sleep out without complete melt-downs!

    Asleep for the last hour, we'll see what happens next...

  • I started last week Tuesday and modified it also....and he went from hardly napping (maybe 20 minutes, maybe an hour, maybe nothing) and waking several times during the night and having a 2-3 hour wakeful time in the middle of the night to:

    napping for 2-3 hours with no fuss, tonight was only one 10 min cry session, and he still wakes up 2x a night to nurse (I will not give this up until he stops really drinking from me....I don't see a need to stop nursing) and when he wakes to nurse, he goes to bed right away, no crying.

    It was really hard, but I'm glad I stuck with it. He's not tired all day like he used to be and he's happier now!

    Good luck!
