Re: 1 hour glucose test

  • I failed my 1 hour also.  My 3 hour came back fine.  I had mine in the span of a couple of days.  I would say just make sure you don't eat before and drink lots of water.  Otherwise there's not much you can do to control the results.  It's testing to see how your body processes the sugar, not how much sugar is in your body at this moment.

  • Try to cut back on your carbs for a few days before your test and watch your sugar intake.

This. Just do exactly what your doc tells you to do before the test. You don't want to risk altering the test in anyway, you need good honest results to make sure you and LO are safe all the way through!

  • i agree im just figuring that maybe i should watch my diet anyway.  so anything i can do to be proactive would be good i think.

  • you shouldnt do anything differently, definately dont change your diet. i dont think it is wise and you cant "trick" the test by lowering your sugar intake or anything like that. like PP said, it measures how your body processes sugar, not how much is in your body at any given time.

for the record, i have GD and its not the most fun thing ever, but its not the end of the world! i'm glad i know i have it though - so that i can handle it accordingly!!

    good luck mama!!

  • I failed my 1 hour and passed my 3 hour...the tech also said that how much energy you spent the day before the test can affect the results (if your body is on a burn mode)

but just dont eat and stay hydrated!

    Good Luck

  • I just had my 3 hour yesterday. I had to fast for at least 10 hours before hand, and after eating supper I wasn't hungry until after the fasting period had begun, so I ended up fasting for like 12 hours before the test. From the time I found out from my doctor that I hadn't passed the 1 hour, I started watching my carbs and sugar intake. I have been continually keeping an eye on and counting carbs since last week, when I was told that I would have to take the 3 hour test. I  feel like I'm beginning to prepare myself for cutting back IF they say I do indeed have gestational diabetes. Just don't stress about the test, and ask if you are allowed to take short walks in between blood draws. (especially if you are used to being up and moving) It was crazy for me to just sit there for over 3 hours when I never just sit anywhere. (While at work, I walk on average 3 miles a day) Your body is able to process the sugars better if you are more active. I know this because my brother is diabetic, and he has to use less insulin if he is more active, than he does if he's just hanging out.

    Hope this helps a bit!

  • There's nothing you can do to change your body's ability to tolerate sugar during pregnancy. It's hormonal. You just want to avoid going on some crazy binge & crash cycle before your test - so eat normally until you have to begin fasting as instructed.

Only 15% of women who fail the 1 hour fail the 3 hour and really have GD. I failed the 1 hour so I understand your fear. I did pass my 3 hour yesterday.

Ultimately, you do need to know if you have GD.
