WAHM--what do you do?

I have been unhappy with my job for about 3-4 years now, and I really feel like enough is enough.  DS is almost 4 and I still hate leaving him at daycare.  Yes, I know for some moms they enjoy going out and working, but I really think I need to find a way to wah and still contribute to our income.  Any ideas and leads are greatly appreciated.  I know I could tutor (I teach elementary school) and that is a possibility, but am looking for other ways as well.  TIA

Re: WAHM--what do you do?

  • Just so you know, most jobs that allow you to work from home will require you to show proof that you have child care if you have kids. So WAHMs often end up still sending their kids to daycare or getting in house help.

Or are you just looking for small part time things?

  • I guess it depends on how much income you want/need to contribute. It would make it easire to hae suggetions if I knew your skills.

You can possibly sell Avon or Mary Kay. If you have a craft you can use that to make and sell items. Like gift baskets, edible arrangements, floral arrangements, center pieces, be a party planner; just some ideas.

Staying at home with my kids is ideal.  I want to cut out daycare expenses.  I would have both kids at home for one year before DS goes to kinder.  I think that anything, big or small, would work.  I did sell PC for a while, but found that was NOT for me.

  • Are you open to watching a few other kids during the day? I would do this if I didn't really want to keep my current job.

  • I work from home full-time and my job is our only income. It took a while to work to this point though. Most companies that pay good money to work from home want you to work in the office for a while and prove yourself.

PS. I work for an online university as a student advisor.

  • What is your current job? I don't have any kids yet, but plan to be a WAHM. I own two businesses - one is an event decor and planning company I started with my friend a year and a half ago that is doing really well. We have done over 100 weddings and have another 50+ for 2010. The other is consulting for nonprofits (I am finishing up my PhD in Evaluation). Try to think of a way to turn your job into consulting if possible.

  • What about watching other kids? I would think tutoring would be great too or maybe PT work for one of those tutoring companies like Sylvan? I know someone suggested Avon or Mary Kay...any type of direct marketing/sales and you could do parties evenings and weekends when your DH is home with kids.

There is a correspondent for Good Morning America named Tori Johnson.  She owns a company called Women for Hire.  She often talks of a number of companies that allow moms to work from home.  See if she has a website or check out Good Morning America's webiste.

  • I would also look into websites like elance, you can pick up small jobs here and there.

  • I found a way to do what I did full-time, on-site from home, part-time and from home.

I presented the idea to my boss, he went for it and now that's what I do.

  • Just curious, what do you plan to do with your kids while you're working?

I've considered doing the medical transcription that I do in the evenings from home as my only job in the past, but I would still need to find childcare for my child when I'm working, even if it is at home.

  • I've never been a 9-5 person. I do well to work at odd hours. So, I plan to work when the baby is sleeping whether that be at 9am or 2am. I also have some family or hubby that can watch the baby when I have off-site meetings or events to set-up.

  • I work at home as a web designer.

  • I'm in software consulting and work from home when I'm not traveling. However we will still need FT daycare as I work 50ish hours a week and travel quite a bit. I started off working in an office and was kept on remotely when we had to move.
  • I work for tutor.com.  It's super flexible and most of the hours are 4pm-12am EST.  Being in CA, I usually work on weekday afternoons.  You can schedule yourself hours, or just pop in and out (tho this doesn't guarantee you a student, I have always been able to work when I logged in during "peak" times.
  • I work at home in medical transcription and plan to do this after the baby is here too.
