High-Risk Pregnancy

Newly Diagnosed with GD

Hey ladies,

I just heard from my doctor that I have GD.  I'm a little nervous to be finding out this late in the game.  I had my one-hour GTT on September 16th and was told that my results were okay, but at my appointment 2 weeks ago (a month after the test), my MW said that my results were borderline and I had glucose in my urine, so they wanted me to do the 3 hour GTT, which I took last week.

I just wish I'd know earlier so that I could've started treating it sooner.  My MW's office is having me meet with a dietician and then a perinatologist in a few weeks.  Any words of wisdom/what should I expect?  I've really been hoping for a natrual, vaginal delivery.  Is the GD going to interfere?

Re: Newly Diagnosed with GD

  • as long as you can get your GD under control, you should be able to have a natural, vaginal delivery. I have GD, and I'm having a home birth, both my midwife and my OB have said it's fine as long as I have my blood sugar under control with diet, which I do.

  • Sorry about the diagnosis.  I too have GD.  Don't worry.  It isn't so terrible.  I have been able to control mine with diet and exercise and am still hoping for a natural vaginal delivery.  It all depends really.  If you are under good control and your MW will work with you, I think it is totally possible.

I have to say that the peri I go to is extremely conservative and has been itching to get me on insulin from the start because my 2 hour draw was particularly high.  I want to avoid insulin, if possible, because I do think it increases your risk of a high intervention birth.  So, the times they have wanted to start me on insulin, I have done research, talked with my OB and asked to be given a few days to see if we can get the numbers down (mind you, my numbers have never been very high-not even to the point where most doctors would prescribe insulin- only a couple of points over- if they were high, I would have definitely taken the insulin to prevent adverse effects on the baby).  The numbers have always gone back down- usually with an adjustment to diet and exercise routines.

So, my advice would be to educate yourself so that you can aim for a natural birth.

However, I would also try to go with the flow- sometimes things don't go the way we want and if in the next 4 weeks, the GD is causing complications, I fully plan to undergo any necessary interventions and not feel too disapointed about it.

I think my success with the diet control has been eating mostly natural unprocessed foods and walking twice a day.

Those are my tips.  Good luck!
