Whole or lowfat milk?

Hey ladies! So I took Mikey to his 2 yr checkup yesterday and I asked the doc about whole milk vs lowfat milk and when to make the switch. He said that he should stay on whole milk until he's 3 for brain development. I have a few friends that have been told otherwise though. One was told to switch to a lower fat milk at 2 and another was told to switch to a lower fat milk at 18 months because they have a history of heart disease and high cholesterol in their family. Well I have a history of heart disease and high cholesterol in my family too and the doc knows that. He didn't seem too worried about that stuff at Mikey's age, said we'd address that more when he's an adolescent.

So I'm curious what you all are doing and what you've been told from your pedi regarding milk.

Re: Whole or lowfat milk?

  • My ped said to switch to one percent or skim at the 2 yr appt but i am waiting.

  • my pedi said to switch to 2 percent or whatever we were drinking at 2 yrs. old.
  • I forgot to ask at DD's 2-year appt last week, but I did make the switch to 1% at that time (what we drink). She doesn't drink much milk anyway (but she eats a lot of yogurt, and we have basically switched to lowfat yogurt as well).
  • We just had DS's 2 year appt. last Monday. We were told to switch to Skim milk, but to give him full-fat yogurt and cottage cheese still.......

  • We use whole or 2% for the kids.  Hunter and Lily share milk and Hunter isn't 2 yet so it is mostly whole.  When we buy 2% it is organic with extra DHA which supposedly helps brain development.

  • At his 2 year visit, our pedi told us to switch him to what we were drinking too, which was 2% - but is now 1%.
  • Switched to 2% at 18 months and will switch to skim (what we drink) at 2.
  • Our pedi said to switch to 2% at 2 yrs (we drink 1% or skim).

  • He is still on whole, because he's thin.  The doc doesn't want him losing weight, which could happen if we switch now.

  • we were told that the general rule of thumb was to switch to lowfat or skim by age 2 but we could stick to whole if we wanted to b/c dc are skinny.  We switched to 1 or 2%.. there's not a huge calorie/fat difference until you switch to skim anyway.  honestly, we did not see a difference in dd's growth after the switch... she remained on her curve (around 2-3rd percentile for wt) until this last sick visit in august when she jumped a little... summer growth spurt.
  • Olivia is so small (20 pounds) that I give her whole milk.  I don't see us switching anytime soon, but will see what the pedi recs at her 2yo appointment in December.
  • DD is right-on for her ht/wt growth curve, so at 2yo we switched her to 2% milk. I'll tell you why I did it, against my pedi's advice. The satiety factor. She would rather drink 35 oz of whole milk a day than eat solid food. So, I thought that if she got less fat/calories from her milk, she'd eat more. And that's exactly what happened. She still drinks waaaay too much milk, so we are making a big effort to reduce that. I'm curious as to how much everyone's kids drink now. I think I'll start a new post...
  • Both the girls are still on whole milk.  With them only being a little over a year and a half apart, it just didn't make sense to have them on different milks.  At our 2-year appt with DD#1, our pedi also recommended that she stay on the whole for brain development and for the fat/calories.  He said he "always" recommends that.  Funnily enough, one of my friends also has the same pedi.  He told her to go ahead and switch her DS over to 1% or whatever they drink at home at 2 (or maybe before?) and that he always tells all parents that.  The difference?  DD#1 is in about 3% for weight and her DS is probably well over 75%-90% (not sure).  We laughed about it.  He would never mention their weight b/c he doesn't want us to be self conscious about it and we'd never have known if we didn't have the same pedi.

Anyway, I asked again at DD#1's 3-year appt and he said it wasn't hurting anything to keep her on the whole milk and it was just easier with the two girls.  My guess is (assuming this little boy is as tiny as he's looking), my kids will be on whole milk for a long time.  It's nice to have around the house for cooking any everything anyway.  When we're out to dinner, traveling, or just run out of their whole milk, the girls drink our 2% or whatever the restaurant/our hosts have and don't notice the difference.  I'm not OCD about it or anything.

  • Our pedi told me to keep DS on whole milk until 3 because he is small for his age and has always been low on the charts for his weight.
