Toddler Withholding Poops

Help!  DD only goes poop when she physically can't hold it in anymore which ends up being every 4-5-6 days.  She is so constipated by then it hurts to go.

I give her Miralax with her drinks, but she barely drinks anything.  We do apple juice, but that doesn't seem to help and she won't drink prune juice.

She eats OK, but you can tell she is uncomfortable by the end of day four or so.

Pedi suggests more Miralax and push fluids, but I think it it mostly a mental challenge.  Anyone been there, done that?

She is almost two and not interested in PT.

TIA

Re: Toddler Withholding Poops

  • My little one is 3 and pooping in the potty is the hardest thing for her.  The doctor said to use Miralax 1/2 a cup once a day for 2 weeks to get her over her fear of pooping in the potty.

DD holds it also but I have found that juices she will drink are fruit fusion lite by V-8, Plum juice 1/2 juice 1/2 water, and the tots apple juice.  Usually she will just drink water.  Also if has been 4 days without a poop I give her a mcdonalds hamburger and withint 2 hours she has a number 2.

  • My ds had this problem at this age and actually still does. But, that is another story. Anyway, my ds is on miralax, but again, he isn't much of a drinker, so it is hard to get down him. So, we load him up with A LOT of fiber. Apples, beans, pears, broccoli, fiber rich cereal, for example. And, we make sure he gets a lot of exercise as that tends to work a bm up. And a hashbrown from McDonalds in the morning seems to work miracles too! Something nice and greasy.
