whitehead on areola?

i have what looks like a whitehead pimple on my areola.  does anyone know what that is?  could it be a clogged duct?  or thrush?  it hurts so bad when LO feeds on that side.  thanks for your help!

Re: whitehead on areola?

  • When I had one it was an infection of the Montgomery gland that needed treatment with antibiotics.  Once it finally popped a couple days after treatment it still hurt but it was so much better pain wise to deal with.

  • It could also be a milk blister.  I had one, and it was sore to the touch, but it went away on its own.  I looked like a giant whitehead, but it wouldn't pop.

I thought milk blisters were on the nipple itself. I could be wrong, but I was reading about breastcare when I was trying to find something to help my cracked nipples when we first started nursing and I remember thinking "OW" because the "treatment" was to let the baby suckle and that would clear the duct opening.

  • The montgomery glands secrete a lubricating substance, and sometimes milk ducts end on the aureola rather than on the nipple.
