1st Trimester

How many u/s do you get?

When I was at my RE I went weekly for u/s. My last u/s was @ 10 weeks at RE, my next one will be at my 1st trimester screening @ 13 weeks (this Friday) and then I guess not again until 20 weeks? Does that seem right?

Seem soo long! Right now at my OB I just get to hear the hb from the doppler and he checks my tummy.

Just curious!

Re: How many u/s do you get?

  • We are self pay so maybe one?  Last pregnancy we had about 6 due to failure for my stomach to grow....we were insured and they were covered!

  • From what I've heard other people talk about, yes that seems right. I'm not sure how a lot of this works since my DH is active duty military. People look at me weird when I tell them I get an U/S at every visit. I thought that was for everyone. Now I hear different. Indifferent

  • normally only one at 20 weeks.

  • We get one at 18w and the optional one at 12w.  They did a very short one at my first visit to date the pregnancy, though.

I know it's comforting to have more confirmation, but as long as things are fine, I'm happier not having many.  The fewer, the better, imho.

  • My insurance pays for 1.

We had to have weekly U/S' for the last six weeks with DD because of complications.

  • With my first pregnancy, I had one planned for 20 weeks, but ended up with two early (bleeding in 1st trimester, first u/s didn't show a hb, so we had a follow-up a week later) then several more after my 20w for low fluid/slow growth. And then after 41 weeks my MW does a routine u/s every 2-3 days, so I had three(?) then. All were "medically necessary" so covered by insurance.

I've had one this pregnancy to date the pregnancy, but barring any pregnancy complications, I will only have one more, around 20 weeks.

  • 1 every 2 weeks from week 6 - 13, then a big one at 20 weeks. It's just my OBs policy. She knows how nervous new mothers can be during the first tri, and seeing the baby is comforting.
  • My doc only orders one (20 weeks) unless you're high-risk or expecting multiples.  There's really no other reason to do more.  She does have a dinosaur-age sonogram machine in her office, and she has hooked me up to that a couple of times - once when she couldn't find Ava's HB at 11 weeks, and once at the end of my pregnancy with Logan to check the fluid levels.

This. Although the OB I go to does it for everyone. They also do dvd's of the u/s which is neat.

  • 9wks 1day(to date pregnancy)

    scheduled u/s @ 13wks2days(Nuchal translucency)

I think my next will be 20 wks. I thought this was pretty normal I guess. Unless you have a lot of complication, which I am thankful that I do not.

  • My doc only does the 20 week ultrasound.  You can do the NT scan if you opt for it.  Early ultrasounds are only done if there is some sort of risk.

  • I looked into this with both my doctor and insurance company to be sure. They both said 3. One around 10 - 12 weeks. One at 20 then one in the last trimester. Unless there is complications
  • Just one. I had it at 18w5d.
  • My OB's policy is 2 - 1 to date the pg/check for multiples, 1 anatomy u/s at 20 weeks.

With multiples, I get one at every appt.

  • I don't think there's a right answer.  Every doctor is different.  You basically get what you get.  I had nine with my last pregnancy, all covered by insurance.  With this one I had one at 6 weeks, I'll have one at 10 weeks, and I'll have a 1st trimester screening.  Not sure how many after that.
  • With DD my appointments started at 9 weeks and I had one ultrasound at 19 weeks.

With this baby my appointments start at 7 weeks and I am hoping my crazy cycles will convince them to do an internal ultrasound to get a better idea of dates. :)

  • You get what you need.

  • that seems about right.  i asked my ob at my last appt and i'll only get another one from them at 20 weeks and my phase 2 sequential screen (so technically 2 more).  after that, i won't be getting any unless there are complications.

  • I get one every time I go in. So far I have had two. I've had a m/c so my Dr. does it for peace of mind
  • Every dr is different.

I get one to date and one at 20 wks, unless otherwise needed.

I ended up with 4 last pregnancy.
