NBR: WWYD? Medical situation

My SIL has stage 4 endometriosis. She just had surgery to remove a cyst the size of a grapefruit from her ovary. She started on birth control pills and she's bleeding even though she is not supposed to. The doctor told her to call if she was bleeding. Well she's been calling for 2 weeks straight and no one gets back to her. The person she does talk to, the triage nurse, keeps telling her to wait until her appointment on the 9th and won't put them through to the doctor like the doctor requested that they do.SIL is hopped up on pain meds and still in severe pain. That kind of advice from the triage nurse is just cruel and ignoring what her doctor told her to do but she's stuck.

She's part of the Valley Med system since they are low/no income right now. I'm beyond frustrated for them. SIL is in severe pain and is diving into severe depression and cannot get treatment.

I suggested that they go through the ER during a non- busy time (like early morning hours) to get at least an obgyn to look at her. They said that Valley Med sends the non-urgent cases to another clinic where they won't do anything for you.

Has anyone here been through Valley Med or know someone who has that could get through when they needed help? Can you give me advice on how SIL can get her case escalated. I would hate to think that they let her get so bad where they have to remove her other ovary and her entire uterus.

  • OMG that is awful!! She needs to get pushy and be her own advocate. I personally would not be above going to the er.

  • I wish I could offer some advice. MIL was taken via ambulance to Valley Med for her motorcycle accident and the care she received there was infuriating.

I hope your SIL gets the care she deserves. It sounds like a potentially severe situation. :( I'm sorry.

  • I would have her or her? husband? call the triage nurse and tell them that if she doesn't get to talk to her doctor they are taking her to th ER.

Then I would go to the Valley med ER first. If they don't do anything to check her out, like a sonogram or whatever,I would go to another ER.

  • I don't have any specific advice for you but I just wanted to say: give 'em hell!! I hate to hear that she is being ignored, that is awful. I hope she is able to get some treatment soon. Good luck to her!

  • I'd walk into the Dr.'s office and tell the receptionist that I was sitting there until the doc at least came out and looked at me, that doc had asked to be informed of additional bleeding and the nurse was refusing to do anything.  If they ignore her I would head to the closet ER.
