Ugh! He stopped taking a bottle...help!

DH tried to feed C a bottle before bed tonight but he refused to take it.  When I got home he had put him in his crib with the paci (after trying for about 20 minutes to give him the bottle).  The paci seemed to work for awhile, but then he was up crying.  DH tried the bottle again but he wouldn't take it...he would make a face and then turn his head side to side to avoid it.  DH put him in the crib again with the paci but when he started crying again I went in and tried the bottle (I know, I know, but I thought I would at least try....).  Of course he wanted nothing to do with the bottle and kept turning his head into my b00bie.  I finally gave in and nursed him and he calmed down and fell asleep (which is the usual routine...I feed him and he falls asleep and I put him in his crib).  I know it's a bad habit for him to need to eat to sleep, but I don't really want to mess with it if it works, ya know?

C has taken bottles before without any issues.  My parents were here for ACL weekend and he drank bottles all weekend -  and it was BM that I had stored up in the freezer.  The BM for tonight had also been in the freezer and it's not past the 'expiration date'.

This happened once before 2 weeks ago when we had a babysitter (for the first time).  He had refused the bottle so she had rocked and walked around with him until he finally cried himself to sleep.  When he woke up an hour later she was able to feed him the bottle.

We're going to see if DH can feed him the bottle when he wakes up tonight for the first time.  But, any other tricks we should try?  Any ideas why he would stop taking a bottle?

  • Other than the babysitter night & tonight, has he taken bottles with any problems?

  • Did he take some of it and then turn away? I can't tell by what you described, but it almost sounds like the milk might be sour. I'd definitely keep trying and make sure to smell or taste the milk beforehand so you know it hasn't gone bad.

i can only store my milk in the freezer for maaaaybe 2 months. i'm one of those lucky girls w/ high lipase in my milk and it makes the milk taste funny faster.

Well, we haven't given him a bottle any other time Embarrassed  Could it be because we're not giving him a bottle 'regularly'?

I can't speak for C, but until just recently, Will only got a bottle maaaybe 2 or 3 times a month. Now he gets a couple bottles on the weekends when I'm gone and he's with DH. Once we figured out that he likes the Playtex Drop-Ins, he hasn't had an issue at all switching from breast to bottle.

hmmmm, yeah, I have heard of the 'soapy' smell that happens.  It doesn't really smell like anything to me though.  How does one go about finding out if they have high lipase?
The BM from tonight was dated 8/28 so it's just about 2 months old.

This could definitely be it.  Speaking from expirence, DO NOT under any circumstances stop giving him a bottle unless you want to EBF until you wean.  It's been HELL for us when DS stopped taking a bottle at about 6 months.  My supply dipped way down and I needed to supplement with frozen milk and he wouldn't have anything of it.

I would be giving him at least 3-4 bottles a week.  At least.  I stopped giving him bottles at about 3 months when he became so efficient at nursing and it was the worst mistake.  He took them fine from day 5, but not really at all after that.  I thought since he took it fine initially he would have no problems going back and forth forever.  Not the case.  Everyone kept telling me "he'll eat it if he's hungry" well, that's a lie because my kid would rather wait for the boob- no matter how long it takes.  Seriously, keep after it with the bottles.

    you'd definitely smell it.

jack didn't care, but tommy will give you a bitter beer face.

  • For us, if we didn't give him a bottle regularly he didn't want one and it took forever to get him to take it again.

If we gave him one or two every few days he's keep up with it.

'prolly.  Whenever it's been a while since A had a bottle, she's usually pretty pissy about taking it.  Like bride said, we try to make sure she gets at least a couple a week.
