Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Peek-a-boo at 6 months?

At our 6 month appointment today, the first developmental "can baby do" question that the nurse asked me is whether baby plays peek-a-boo.  I asked, "what do you mean, plays peek-a-boo, he can't talk."  I was utterly confused, and I didn't even know that I was supposed to be playing peek-a-boo at 6 months.  In our Gymboree classes, we sing a peek-a-boo song and cover baby with a scarf, pull it away, say peek-a-boo, and baby squeals with laughter.  I described this, but nurse said, "No, I meand, does baby cover his own eyes and pull his hands away."  Seriously!?!  Does your 6 month old do that?

Of course, we've started practicing in earnest all afternoon.  I"ve gotten some good giggles, but he has not attempted to cover his own eyes yet.

Re: Peek-a-boo at 6 months?

  • I know my youngest didn't do it until about 9 months, and that's with an object, not her hands, even still. I don't remember the age with my other kids.

Don't worry about it at all!

  • Yeah.... she LOVES it! You have to teach them I guess. I didn't the sitter did! I wouldn't have known to be honest.... but I do it with her all the time.

  • Don't worry about it at all! DS doesn't play with his eyes or hands, but he does cover his face with a blanket and play that way. But he doesn't babble "mamamama" or "dadadada" or anything close, so you know, sometimes they do things "on target" and sometimes they don't! For the record, though, I'm not sure peek-a-boo is a 6 month milestone anyway.

  • he will do it with a blanket, burp cloth or bib...but not his hands.  his fingers always get distracted by his eyelashes.  lol.

  • DS will putt a blanket over his face and pull it down but he's not even close to doing it with his hands yet!  I can't believe that is a 6 month milestone!

  • He didn't do it with his hands, but at 5 months he would with a scarf or whatever else we could find (burp cloth, blanket etc.)  DS would put it over his face and yank it down real fast....we'd say "Peek-a-boo!", he'd giggle and then do it again, over and over.

wow....my kid can do peek-a-boo....yet he still can't crawl consistently.

He could hold his own bottle at 4 months but didn't sit up until almost 7 months.

I've given up on comparing DS to other kids....it was driving me batty.

  • Ummm, no. My LO doesn't do that. In fact, I try to play peek a boo with her and she loses interest in it really quickly. I don't think that's an average 6 month milestone??
  • I don't post here all that often but I had to post to this one.....

I am surprised that this is considered a 6 month milestone, my little man will be 6 months on Thursday and he doesn't really even seem to get peak a boo much when we play it and I do it....I think it may be some time before he can figure out how to cover his eyes and do it himself.
