2nd tri screening?

Did anyone do this?  It might only be offered to AMA moms.  :(  (Advanced Maternal Age).  It was offered to us - I'll talk to my OB about it on Friday but I'm curious....
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

Re: 2nd tri screening?

  • Is this something beyond the 15 week blood work, which I think is the AFP test or quad screen?

  • I think I had that. I believe Kaiser considered the NT Scan + Bloodwork the 2nd Tri screening. Could be wrong though.

  • The NT scan/bloodwork is done before 13w6d....the 2nd tri is bloodwork done between 15-18 weeks and looks for spina bifida, etc.   Maybe it's the quad screen????  I have no idea.  :(

  • I did the NT blood work at 11 weeks then the NT scan, then at about 16.5 weeks I did the second trimester blood work, which they used to call the quad screen but now it's called something else.

I think it's pretty standard, I have Kaiser.

  • I believe you are describing the quad...which is now called something like AFP or whatever...it is the recommendation of some national screening thing.  This is a standard thing for Kaiser patients to do, you can choose to not do it though.

I had a CVS so I didn't need to do this...except for the normal bloodwork.  So I am no help.

  • I did it a couple of weeks ago. I just assumed it was part of the 1st trimester screening, meaning I did that, so I would just automatically do the 2nd trimester one also and I don't have Kaiser.
  • Maybe what you are referring to is called "Expanded AFP" Test? I didn't have it done (I did the NT and Amnio) but this is what my OB says about it:

The Expanded AFP Test The Expanded AFP is a blood test that is drawn between 15 and 20 weeks gestation (16 - 18 wks is the ideal time). This test is most useful in identifying fetal open neural tube defects (such as spina bifida and anencephaly), Down syndrome, and Trisomy 18. Additionally, abdominal wall defects (abnormal openings in the abdomen which allow the liver or intestines to protrude through) may be identified through this test as well.
  • Thanks everyone! :)  I knew you guys would know!!!

  • If it's the AFP , or quad screen, that's offered to all patients.  If it's the amino my docs didn't even talk about it, it was only the MFM doc that mentioned I was eligible since I would be just over 35 when LO was born.  I declined since I did the NT scan and I'd just been pregnant the year before :)
  • we only did/are doing the blood work portion of it, not the u/s
