2nd Trimester

anyone eat sushi anyway

so with my first I was super strict about caffeine intake, cheeses, etc..

This time Im not so paranoid.  i eat gorganzola, goat cheese, and feta all the time.  I think its safe!

Im dying for some sushi rolls. spicy tuna. yum!!!

Is it really that bad to have one roll?  I know its the fear of bacteria or food poisoning.  But if its a place I eat at all time (pre-pregnancy) and I know its safe is it still too risky. In your opinion anyway.

Re: anyone eat sushi anyway

  • I'd personally eat it from a reputable place where I know they are getting excellent quality fish.  I would not get it from the supermarket and eat it.  Just not gonna happen.

  • Yeah I wouldn't eat sushi from a supermarket  not pregnant.  This place is really nice and I eat it all time when Im not pregnant.

  • Yes, yes and yes.  The only fish that has high enough mercury counts in HUGE amounts to do any damage are mackeral, shark and tilefish.  Mackeral is the only one I've seen on a sushi menu and even if you choose that one you would have to eat A TON to have any issues.  My OB has said it's totally fine to me and as long as it's a reputable, clean place I would go, and I do go, all the time, did with my first and do now, no issues!
  • I've been going back & forth with this too, we have a place called Chi Tung near us (it's been in the chicago tribune so many times) it's amazing. I really want some philladelphia maki. I haven't done it yet but I don't know if I'll make it nearly 5 more months. I also have been eating feta and drinking caffeine. It's funny how much you relax after you have your 1st.

  • I've had a couple pieces of the raw stuff but not a whole order to myself... I order the cooked, and steal a couple bites of DH's, as long as it's at a very good restaurant.
  • I have been eating blue cheese and cold cuts... but I would not be eating a spicy tuna roll - in my opinion that is a little overboard but to each their own.

I have had the calafornia rolls (the ones with crab) - or shall I say "fake sushi"... LOL.  But I would stay away from the raw stuff.

  • I just had some last week & it was sooooo good.  Like pp's said, as long as it's from a reputable place, go for it!!

  • I have raw sushi once or twice a month without issue and my doc said it was fine too as long as it was from a reliable place... Since I know the owner of our sushi place, I don't have anything to worry about!

Since your in chicago you should try House of Sushi and Noodles, its cute, little and always packed but its amazing, the prices for the buffet are cheap and its not the buffet were you go up and get ur food, you order what you want, as many rolls as you want and they make it fresh. mmmmmmmm the miami rolll is the best!

  • I had a spicy tuna roll on Saturday night, and it was awesome :)  Just make sure you go to a reputable place.

The cheeses probably are fine -- almost ALL cheeses available in the USA are pasteurized, so pose no risk.  Doing some reading online, even most of the small-batch cheese-makers in this country use pasteurized milk for their product.

As for the sushi, that's a personal choice, of course.  I'm only eating the cooked stuff right now, but there are enough choices that I don't feel slighted to have to wait several more months.

  • I eat it.  I don't get gas station sushi, and 99.9% of sushi in America is flash frozen, killing the parasites anyway.

    Plus it's delicious

  • I've had sushi and unpasteurized cheese and milk.  go for it!
  • Mmmmm... I want sushi!  When I go I would probably get a california roll or something- but usually I just get the tuna anyway.  I wouldn't worry about it a couple of times.  I eat lunch meat, drink caffeine, and eat tuna occasionally and am not too worried at this point.
  • I eat sushi, soft cheeses, medium rare steak, coffee and diet coke.

  • If I was back home I would be eating sushi almost everyday. I have never gotten sick from sushi, but I also only eat it from higher end places... Not from the grocery store or anything like that. I know that a lot of people, if they do get sick, get sick from the rice, not the fish.

  • i've had sushi twice so far this pregnancy, including tuna. i think it's fine in moderation, as long as it's from a very reputable place. enjoy!
  • Had some this weekend...yummy. Right now I'm sticking to salmon and will move on to tuna during my 3rd tri. It is my own little boundries. I have only had it twice since finding out, but will induldge in 3 weeks.
  • I go to a place called Samurai at least once a month, I just love it!  I get sashimi and rolls and I've never gotten sick.

I also drink caffeine and eat cheese, rare steak, lunch meat, etc...

  • If its that big of a craving, I would ask your OB.  Mine is against it completely...she is super-conservative, but it took a while for us to get PG, so I am not doing anything to risk it at all...good luck!
  • Yep.  No problems here.
