So...do you really need to buy special nursing bras or can't you just use front closure bras? I mean, yeah you'll be letting lose both boobs, but unless you are in public, does it really matter? There are just some things I guess I don't feel like spending the money on when I can use something I can use again in normal life. Same for a sports bra. Why does it have to snap down to let the boob out? Why not just flip it up?
Is there really a big difference? Same thing with maternity underwear. Why not just buy a size or two larger of regular? Wouldn't that be cheaper and you'd get more wear out of it than spending $ on maternity specific panties?
As you can tell, I'm looking for short cuts or have done shortcuts to save money since we've been paying for everything...medical/Dr/etc. out of pocket. Same goes for baby. Anything people said you had to have, but you found everyday alternatives?
Re: Short cuts?
I'm with you on the nursing bra thing. I wear a lot of cami/tank top things with a shelf bra around the house. They are fairly low cut, so I'm wondering if I'll just be able to pop a boob out of the top instead of spending $75 on a nursing tank that flips down. As far as underwear, I'm still wearing my regular ones, they are just sitting a bit lower, below the belly right now.
Maybe try reposting on Parenting over 35 to see if those ladies have any advice since they've "been there done that"?
Good questions and I'd like to know the answer!
I work from home so it doesn't really matter to me, but I don't want to spend a fortune just for the bras and tops I need for a few meetings and conferences!
Target and Old Navy both seem to have some affordable nursing camis and tanks though!
Well any bras that fits me when I am nursing will not be useful when I stop nursing, since it will be way too big, so I might as well get bras made for the purpose.
As for panties, I am still wearing the same panties as before I got pg. Bikini styles sit below the belly.
Well, I nursed three babies in the past and I have to say those nursing bras were an absolute necessity! I had three or four that I would alternate constantly- unfortunately, there is a lot of leaking or unintentional "letting down" of your milk at unexpected times- I always had pads in there just in case, but it would still happen.
Back to why I think so: You will find that you do a lot of things one handed once that baby comes- the nursing bras are a simple, one handed manuever to "re hook" the top over each breast. Quick and simple- then on to the next boob... seriously, I can not imagine having to put the baby down, use both hands to re-attach a front closure bra.
Plus- you will want to throw these nursing bras away when you are done- they really get stained and ruined from all the nursing and really worn from all the washing.
Hope this helps- just my opinion and my experience
