3rd Trimester

does your baby shiver in the womb?

The last few weeks the baby will shiver or shake for a few seconds. The best way to describe it is when you get the chills and shiver really quick (2-3 seconds). I asked my Dr. about it and he said it is called the "moro reflex" or startle reflex and it is completely normal.

So I started to pay attention to when this is happening. What stimulus is maybe causing a baby to get startled in the womb because it happens almost every day! I notice it when ever I eat anything new/spicy/different -and the hiccups are usually followed a couple minutes afterwards, if a loud noise happens right next to me (like a car horn), or when I get startled by something.

Has anyone ever felt this too? Now I am thinking "geez is this baby going to be a scaredy cat?" I also asked the other pg women I know and my mom they have all given me looks like I am crazy and said they have never even heard of this reflex.

P.S. Here is a link to a video of a baby (outside the womb ofcourse) with the startle reflex. https://www.babyzone.com/baby/newborns/photos_infant_reflexes

  • My LO does it a few times a week, I haven't noticed when or why. Interesting to know that its the Moro reflex!
  • LO does it at least once a day so I asked my dr about it too because I don't remember feeling it with DD. She said the same thing your dr said. I haven't paid attention to anything specific causing it though.....
  • Yes, LO does this occasionally.  I'm glad to know what it is.  I was going to ask my doctor about it at the next visit.  I haven't noticed anything in particular that causes it.
  • I have this too, and had no idea what it was. It makes me jump half the time because she jumps so much!

  • I have felt it oo but it had never seemed to be in reaction to something - I guess I was not paying close enough attention... LOL
  • I have felt it. It's cool to know what it is. Thanks for posting it.
  • I've felt it. The Moro reflex is described in a lot of baby books. I remember its definitely mentioned in "Heading Home with Your Newborn" by two pediatrician moms. It's similar to the twitch/jerk awake you feel when you're about to fall asleep and you feel like you're falling. Totally normal:)
