4 am demands and tantrums-help!!!

Our dd just turned 2 and is getting molars.  She wakes up screaming, usually related to teeth, but now also to just make demands and scream and cry when we tell her "no, go back to sleep."  In particular, she's been demanding to go downstairs, be moved back and forth between our crib and her bed (specifically saying when she's in bed with us, "I want my cribby", followed by "I want my mommy" and screaming to come back in bed with us, followed by " I want to go downstairs", etc.  I suspect this is what "they" say is "testing" behavior, and I don't like it but also don't know exactly how to respond given she's so uncomfortable with her teeth.  We've been giving her infant tylenol when we can tell she's really in pain, but even after that sets in, she'll scream and cry and throw a major fit from 4-5 ish.  Anyone else's 2 year old do this?

  • Our son has been doing the same thing.  You can bet that at least once a week he wakes up screaming.  And, 4AMish seems to he his favorite time too.  He's getting his molars as well.

  • Not really sure about how to help with the tantrums but it seems like an explanation "no we can't go downstairs it's time to sleep" might help and you might have to give some limits like "if you want out of your crib to be with mommy that's fine but if you get out you are staying out.  No back and forth to your crib."  Hope this phase passes soon for you!

Also, you might want to try Motrin.  Call your pedi if you're not sure about the dose but it should help a little more with the inflammation of teething.  Plus it seems to last longer for DS.

  • Ditto the motrin (I think it lasts longer than tylenol) and on setting boundaries.  I would tell DD that we could either rock in her glider or she could come into our bed, but if she came to our bed she had to go back to sleep and stay until morning.  She started requesting to rock and after 15 minutes I could put her back in her bed.
