if you supplement BM with formula...

do you do separate bottles of 100% formula, 100% BM? or is every bottle mixed?

i don't pump enough at work so i've started mixing bottles with formula to send DS to daycare. the bottles are majority BM but 'topped off' with formula.

but i'm wondering if it matters how they are distributed?

Re: if you supplement BM with formula...

  • It technically doesn't "matter" if it's mixed but if you do mix, you run the risk of wasting your bm if DS doesn't eat it all.  It's better to give separately.  However, being that you are taking this to daycare I doubt they'll have the time to give 2 separate bottles so what I would do is instruct them to give the bm bottles first and then give the formula bottles towards the end of the day.

I keep them separate so if she doesn't drink all the bm bottle I can save it and use it at her next feeding.  If it were mixed with formula I would need to pour it down the drain.

  • DS varies how much he drinks at feedings so I always offer BM first, if he drinks it all then I add formula to the same bottle.

I don't think it matters if you mix your breastmilk with formula.

  • I keep them separated.  I send 2 bottles of EBM and one bottle of formula.

  • I seperate them. But i don't think it really matters
  • I separate them because my mom doesn't mind doing 2 separate bottles. DS usually gets 3oz BM and 3oz formula each feeding. My friend's son goes to daycare and she mixes BM and formula. Like PP said, the only issue is that you would be wasting BM if the baby doesn't finish the bottle.
  • I mix them, topping breast milk off with formula.  I only send 3oz in the bottles because if she doesn't finish the bottle the daycare throws out what is leftover.
