(lots of ?s today) ? re: bedsharing

We haven't ever done bedsharing (except a few times by accident in the beginning - aka me falling asleep while nursing him and waking up an hour or two later) because we have a very spoiled dog that not only sleeps in the bed, but likes to sleep inbetween me and DH.  Last night DS was not having his crib.  I finally gave up and kicked the dog out of the room and let him sleep with us (I'd much rather have the dog cry than DS).  He loved it.  He slept the entire night (which isn't unusual for him) and I felt him snuggle up to me a few times in the middle of the night.  I however, didn't sleep well at all.  I kept waking up paranoid about where he was (still safe and sound in the crook of my arm) and if he had enough room to breath and if my knees were still up etc.  I'd love to bedshare more often (sorry puppy) but if I keep going on like this it won't work.  Did you do this in the beginning?  Do you get used to it/confidant that LO will be OK?

I've researched safe bedsharing, and was following all the recommendations, I was just still so paranoid!

  • I never sleep as well when DS is in bed with us, but I do it because I get more sleep that way than if I didn't.  DS starts out in the co-sleeper or his crib and ends up in bed with us most nights.

  • Have you looked at the co-sleepers?  Might be a good compromise (and it'll let pooch stay in bed! lol)

  • I never sleep quite as well when he's in bed with us, but I sleep better now than I did at the beginning. Part of that I think is because he's older and I know he can roll over/ wake me up if he needs to, but I also trust myself more now.

  • I dont fully go into that REM sleep when she is in the bed with us. We invested in a snuggle nest, which makes me feel a lot better. I still think the benefits of SAFE co-sleeping outweigh having your LO in another room.

Like another PP said, a co-sleeper might be a good option for you and if you dont want to spend the money on one of those, you can always take one of the sides of LO's crib and line it up flush with your bed. I have seen this done many times and all the moms I know love it. Its more space then a co-sleeper and it helps with the transition from bed to crib if thats a transition your worried about.

We co-slept with DD till she was 3 so she never needed her crib but I wish I  would have thought to put her crib against the bed when we were co-sleeping. Right now, our new LO is still small enough for her snuggle nest and bassinet.

  • We have bedshared from the hospital. In the beginning I would stay in one position and not move. I was so accutely aware of DS at all times. Now I'm used to him being there and I can move or turn over.

How did you get her to sleep in her own bed? DD has been co-sleeping since she was born, it's been almost two years. I'm 14 weeks pregnant and hardly getting any sleep anymore because she moves around so much at night and sometimes kicks me in my belly. DH and I have tried putting her in her bed, but she wakes up every 2 hours which really inhibts my sleep

We started spending more time in her room together and even slept in there together for a while. After a week or so of sleeping with her in her room, we started sitting in a chair by her bed to read books and to massage her till she fell asleep. Each night we moved the chair a little further away. It took a while but she eventually got the hang of it. Once she was in her room it was important that is she called me I went to her.
