3rd Trimester

S/O measuring big

Since my OB started measuring me, I've been 2cm ahead. For me, this means nothing since I'm short and the baby has no where to grow but OUT. However, at 35 weeks, I measured 37. At 36 weeks, I also measured 37. Both times I technically measured ahead, but it was the same both times. If I'm still measuring 37 at my next appointment, will they do a growth U/S?

I tend to freak myself out before appointments, this just happens to be today's freak out! I guess I just need someone to knock some sense into me and tell me not to worry!

Re: S/O measuring big

  • FWIW, my doc said up to about 35ish weeks, you measure with your week (ie, you'd be around 35 cm if you were 'on track' or whatever). But after that, your growth doesn't always measure up with your weeks - in other words, you won't necessarily be 40 cm at 40 weeks. If your doc is worried, they'll tell you. For now, just try to relax and not worry so much!

  • If @ 37 weeks your are now measuring 37 cm, that just means that everything is where it should be.  I was measuring ahead at one point and am now right where I should be.  My midwife has no concerns and says that everything is good.  You should be fine, GL!

  • I'm not sure... although 2cm ahead than what you actually are isn't really all that uncommon.  From what I've read, when you measure your fundal height it should be within 2 cm of how many weeks you are - it's not an exact measurement.  If you are measuring more than 2 cm off in either direction then it could be a reason to do a growth u/s to see what is actually happening.

I personally wouldn't be super concerned.

  • I measured 2 weeks ahead until around 38 weeks.  Now he is measuring right on track.  I never had a growth u/s, but it might depend on the doctor.  Don't stress yourself out though, measuring ahead is actually pretty normal as babies go through growth spurts in the womb!

  • I have been "measuring big" this pregnancy and I did with DS too. I asked at my last appt. what that meant. He said nothing really- you are just measuring bigger than average. He never says you measure at such and such a week- and really doesn't every say much about what I measure unless I ask.

Some ladies will measure big and then level off. I don't think it is really anything to be worried about, if your doctor doesn't voice any conerns, you shouldn't worry.

  • It's not the measuring ahead I'm concerned about. It's the fact that I've been 2cm ahead for so long, and now I'm not. It's like he's stopped growing, KWIM? I've been at 37cm for two weeks, and I'm worried that he'll still be there again!

  • My ob said after 35 or 36 weeks you tend to not get bigger, at least not noticeably. I wouldn't worry =]
Mom to 2 healthy boys, and a baby girl in Heaven. Heard her heartbeat on 7/18, heartbeat was gone on 7/20. Miss you forever.

Thanks! I'll be sure to ask at my appt on Weds, but I appreciate all the input!
