Work out buffs - rowing machine Q

I'm wondering how "good" of a workout this is. I know ANY activity is good but I'm wondering in comparison to power walking, bicycling, etc - how does it rank? And does it build any muscle?

I really truly have no idea what I'm doing at the gym but I know I need to be there and I really like rowing....

  • rowing can be great. But you have to make sure to do it right (as in using your legs first, not just pulling with your arms).

Depending on how fast / hard you go (many of them the harder you pull the more resistance you will get) then it would be a great alternative to walking/cycling.

  • If it's getting you to go to the gym and do more than you were doing before you were going to the gym, then I say stick with the rowing for a while.  Even if cycling or power walking is a more efficient form of exercise (and I'm not sure it is - it would depend on the intensity in all cases), if you are going to dread going to the gym b/c of it, you are less likely to go at all and then you are back where you started.  I would switch it up every few weeks anyway.  It will keep you from getting bored and challenge new muscles (thus burning more calories).

  • The rowing machine is a great workout, but as a former high school and college athlete (I was on the crew team) it is really REALLY important that you do it correctly or you risk the possibility of a severe injury especially to your back. Anything that motivates you though sounds great in my book: )
