1st Trimester

What the heck is wrong with me??

So my little rash from yesterday has exploded all over my body.  I have a splotchy red rash running from my hips all the way up both sides of my body (not really on my stomach or back) and all the way down my arms and up onto my scalp.  I'm SOOOOOO itchy and uncomfortable.  I called my OB and she said it doesn't sounds pregnancy related, so I should see my dermatologist.  I called my dermatologist and they're fully booked and are unwilling to squeeze me in for an emergency visit.  I'm trying to find another dermatologist in my area who can see me and give me something to relieve the itchiness... but I'm really getting frustrated!

  • My sister had a rash with her most recent pregnancy that sounds similar.  I'm pretty sure her OB took care of that. IMHO, when you are pregnant everything is somewhat pregnancy related or can affect the pregnancy so your OB should be able to take care of it.

ETA: In fact I know her OB took care of it because he even said that when he sees rashes like that during pregnancy the baby is most often a boy. Not for my sister though-it's a girl. LOL!

  • I agree with the second poster...Your OB should see you, pregnancy related or not!  I would demand an appt.

  • Oh I'm sorry that sounds miserable. I googled and I remember you saying you were exposed to shingles and it did say it's possible to have another reaction, but it's very rare and in immunocompromised people. But the main thing was it takes 10-20 days to show up after exposure, and you were just exposed, right? So I would guess it's something else. Are you eating something new? New soaps, shampoo's? New vitamins? Gl I hope you find some relief soon!

  • Do you think you could call your OB back and at least see if you can take some Benydryl or something to try to make it go away and some cortizone or something for itching?

I believe you're thinking of PUPPs (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy), which occurs most often (over 70% of the time) in women carrying boys.  But, the OP's doctor probably ruled this out because it almost always shows up in the third trimester, usually around 35 weeks.

  • That really sounds like it sucks. I'm sorry! I'm not sure where you were staying, I.e. Hotel, but could it be bedbug bites?

Actually, no, she had the rash early in pregnancy and had to take steroids for it.  There is more than one kind of pregnancy rash. From my googling and also lack of expertise I am guessing it was papular dermatitis. And how can a doctor possibly rule anything out over the phone?
