Babies: 0 - 3 Months

TMI but anyone else with incontinence issues post delivery?

I just delivered my second child on Friday and since then have had major issues with my bladder.  My baby was 9 lbs 4 oz which is almost 3 lbs more than my first DD so the doctor thought the size and pushing may have put too much strain on my bladder.  She thinks the muscles are sort of shot and will take time to develop again.  I know we all sort of lose some control of our bladders on some level post delivery but I literally cannot control it at all and if I stand up, sit down or any other real movement, I literally gush urine.  I am not sure how much more I can take as I am trying to care for a newborn and have a 3 year old who needs attention and I am in the bathroom changing pads 1-3 times an hour.

I was told it would take a minimum of a week to get back to even near normal but probably more like 2-4.  I was just curious if anyone is experiencing anything similar and has an idea of how long it takes to progress back to normal.

  • I had a little bit of an issue, but I did some kegels (despite my inner tear), and noticed a difference immediately. Now, I have no problems with it at all.

  • First of all, Congrats!

I did have a lot of trouble at first but eventually things got better in that department. I still have trouble when exercising, so when you feel up to it, keep up the kegels. I wore huge pads for a few weeks until I was able to better hold it.

Have fun running after those two babies!

  • No advice, just wanted to give support. ?I had a 4th degree tear from my wide-shouldered son, so everything from the front to the back tore, and I was terrified of major incontinence issues. ?Everything is all back to normal (thank goodness) and was back to normal within a few weeks, although my doctor didn't think I was very well healed until at least 8 weeks. ?So, this stuff just takes time, but I am sorry you are still at the beginning of the healing stage. ?I remember how tough it was, and how scary that feeling of being out of control was. ?Things need time to heal, but hopefully you will heal quickly. ?I felt like the sitz baths helped me to heal more quickly (bringing good blood flow to the area from the warm water, etc). ?
  • I had a similar issue as you.  I was so swollen and had an internal tear and episiotomy (2nd degree for both).  I had a catheter in for over 24 hours.  My labor was a total of 30 hours plus they left it in for another day after delivery.  I was gushing pee whenever I got up too fast or when I sat down to pee.  I was paranoid going out!  Things got a lot better after a week - just needed time to heal and go back to normal I suppose.  I'm not longer peeing in my pants!
