Pregnant after 35

nursery opinions

Wondering what you'd do in our situation. We have a 1BR apartment, and plan to stay here for at least a year after baby is born. As such, we don't have a separate room for a nursery. So I'm thinking I have 2 options:

1. turn one wall of our bedroom into a nursery. It's a decent size room, but will of course get a little cluttered with a mini crib and stuff in there. (I also will need to paint the room b/c it's a light blue with black and white accents, and I'd like to do something different with the crib skirt...a minimal issue though, cause I like switching things up)

2. use our dining area as a nursery. We have a table and chairs in there now, but we never eat at the table. So we'd move them to storage. The issue here is that it's right off the open kitchen (our kitchen passes through to the dining area which goes right into the living room). I don't think we'd build walls, but might do a curtain or other dividers.

What would you do? In other words, where would you put the baby? (I think it's so funny to say it that way--H and I are always like, we need to decide where to put the baby!)

  • Hmmm..... I guess I would say the bedroom with you two and make one wall the 'nursery'.  I think that would be a great way to use your space and still have as much 'living area' as possible.  (and there will probaby be other things you eventually may need to put in the dining area)

  • I would also say bedroom.  We live in a small house, and even though we have a dedicated nursery, our dining room is quickly filling up with baby stuff as we are assembling different pieces, (swing, stroller, etc).  Also, at our our taking care of baby class, they said the best place to bathe a newborn is on the kitchen table in one of those portable bathtubs.  Even though we don't currently eat in our dining room very much, I think it may be used a lot more in the coming months!
  • use your bedroom as the nursery.  you will eventually have toys everywhere and you could use the dining room as that place.
  • Definitely bedroom.  I think you'll be able to sleep with your child in the same room with much less issue than trying to have baby sleep in an open space adjacent to where you will be "living" - cooking, watching tv, talking, etc.
  • You may want to consider co-sleeping, but I know that's a personal decision you need to discuss with DH. It does save on the space and $$ for a crib. We were in a tiny one-BR duplex when DD#1 was first born; I co-slept with DD#1 and it wasn't entirely a concious pre-made decision--DD kinda decided it for us after I accidentally fell asleep with her while BFing when she was 1 week old--we all slept so great that night we just didn't move her out of our bed for awhile! We didn't buy a crib until we moved into a bigger space with 2 bedrooms, about a year later. You could use the top of a dresser for a changing table, again saving valuable space. You are going to need that dining room space for all your other baby gear.
  • Another vote for bedroom.  For the first few months - or at least weeks, depending on how it goes - you will be getting up w/the baby anyway and it's kind of nice to have him/her nearby.  And the dining area would be a great space to put swing/bouncer/jumperoo/etc. as you get equipment and the baby grows.
  • DH and I are in a one bedroom in the city and we are putting a mini crib in our bedroom.  We thought about putting it in the living room but then realized that if we did this we would have to hang out in the bedroom when baby was sleeping.  At least if the baby is in the bedroom sleeping, you can still be in the kitchen and living room hanging out, cooking,  working, watching tv, talking, etc.  Also if you have visitors, when the baby is sleeping everyone will have to either whisper or hang out in your bedroom to talk because you won't want them to wake the baby!

Not sure if you got your mini crib yet, but we got this one, they had the best prices:  https://www.babyearth.com/da-vinci-emily-mini-crib.html   They also sell a regular mattress for this crib that we got because the mattress that comes with it is really thin.  Do your research before you buy because there are some mini cribs that were recently recalled.

  • Lo  is going to sleep in our room. We're using the one Baby Trend PNP that has a side sleeper and bassinette attachment. I think that having baby in your room seems to be the best idea for sleep. I also agree with most of the others,to clear out your DR and use that during the day for baby. Sort their own room...toys, bounce,swing...plus it sounds like you could see LO whereever you are then so that seems to make sense.
