what to eat before going to the hospital?

So, I realize whatever comes out during labor is totally natural and nothing to be ashamed of, but taking all that into consideration...what is the best last meal to eat before you're going to admit to the hopspital? I want to assure i'm not starving if I have a long labor, keep energy up, but want to make sure it agrees with my GI tract!

Re: what to eat before going to the hospital?

  • all i have to say is NOT a blizzard from DQ which is what i had, not knowing i would be going to the hospital a few hrs later.

  • corn and nuts!  lol.

Something light = toast, fruit, veggies, etc...   With my first, I ate perogies:)

  • I had a steak & cheese grits the night before labor.  & tons of water.

In hindsight, I would eat more protein in the morning.  Two eggs & some whole-wheat toast with fruit would be perfect.  I had a bowl of cereal & it really didn't "hold" me through labor.

  • I went to my Drs appt in the morning and they told me to go to the hospital to be induced.  I was so nervous so I ate a banana.  I ended up throwing up everywhere so it was just as well.

  • I spent about 8 hours in the hospital, then came home for 2 hours ate a burrito from Qdoba, then went back to the hospital and delivered about 12 hours later. I was allowed to eat or drink whatever I wanted all through labor, but I didn't want much so I was glad I had a decent meal "in between".
  • I knew i was in labour and I made my favourite breakfast at 3am- eggs on toast with cheese. I didn't throw up.
  • I went in at 10 pm to be induced and I had Subway for dinner that night.  Didn't give birth until 2 days later though.  I did have a blue slushie after I couldn't eat anymore and that definately came back up...
  • My water broke at 2am.  I had eaten some cheetos before I went to bed that night.  Once my contractions started at about 2:30 I threw up during almost every contraction until about 4:30.  Food was the last thing on my mind.

  • I ate my left over crispy chicken tacos for lunch when I was in labor and didn't puke ever. I think it depends when you are hungry and how your labor is progresssing. If you are going to the hosp and you are 3+cm I would eat something light. If your contrax are still just menstral cramps strength I say eatting something normal with protein is better.

I was on an IV, and I was hungry feeling but you aren't gonna passout from being hungry if you are on the fluids.

  • i was in the most awful pain ever and i had to force myself to eat 2 waffles just to give me some energy. so if you are in lots of pain, having contractions, etc., eat something that will hold you over. i don't suggest it being something really heavy. maybe something with whole grains or fiber or protein to give you fuel.
  • i had a italian sandwich meat panini - i would not recommend it.  i ate something heavy so that i wouldnt be starving the whole labor, but i ended up being nauseated for a large part of my labor, vomited once and with pushing, my reflux was way worse than any discomfort from the pushing...

  • I had bacon and eggs (breakfast for dinner), not knowing my water would break less than an hour later.  I was glad I ate this though.  The protein seemed to hold me over.
  • Not sure there's a "right" answer to this question.  I have a naturally queasy stomach and my mom told me she threw up lots during her labors.  Because of those two facts, I didn't eat at all once labor started.  I managed to throw up anyway and was very glad that I didn't have that much in my stomach.

Everyone is so different...hope whatever you decide works for you!
