Tips for Registering?

Hey ladies...I am going to register for the first time today. We are headed to Babies R Us. Any suggestions?

Did you have multiple registeries? Did you duplicate items on each registry or split them up?

I know we have discussed this before but we all know the search feature sucks, so any "must haves" or "dont bothers"?

TIA. Hope everyone has a great Sunday!

Re: Tips for Registering?

  • My biggest tip is to break it up -- it is so overwhelming to do all at once.  I would suggest starting with the big things, then going back on another day to add the small stuff.  We did have two registries because my family insisting on shopping at Target.  In hindsight I really would have preferred to have just one registry at BRU.

Another tip -- don't be afraid to add fun things or more expensive things!  You can always change the registry online, and you can always return things for store credit if you realize later that you didn't really need/want them.

One more (sorry, keep thinking of things!) -- don't register for any clothes other than some sleepers and onesies.  People will buy you tons of clothes whether you want them to or not.  Plus the seasons change so quickly at the stores -- clothes you register for now might not be available when people start shopping.

    HAVE FUN!

  • yeah, what she said ;-)

I'll add - I LOVE recommending Once Upon a Child and places like that (even Craig's List) for big items, if you don't mind slightly used - heck, I just got a $130 Chicco highchair last week, for $54 and the darn thing looks BRAND NEW, not a speck anywhere. OUAC. Score!  I got all my big things there, and was able to get a lot more smaller things via my showers.

Also, if you know what you're having, (and people know, too) you will get a TON of gender specific things. that drove me nuts. I hate pink. just a head's up there. I got all gender-neutral big items, so we won't have to re-buy if we ever have a boy. Plus, again, I hate pink. lol.

Also don't be afraid to think down the road - yea, you won't be using those 1-2 year old items now, but it kinda stinks to pony up a bunch of money later when you could potentially be getting that stuff as gifts.

I also, FWIW, did not get much stuff off my registry. People got what they wanted, and it was not what I requested. that could be regional/my family though.

  • Ok..thanks for the suggestions so far. I was planning to just look around a bunch today and try to register for the big stuff.

It is overwhelming...I remember shopping for a friend and looking in the bottle aisle and almost crying! There are SO many bottles.....how to decide? We'll see....

Jillrocl: I am going to PM you so you can send me that spreadsheet. TIA!!!!

  • I agree with the pp. ?Also... take your time. ?You don't have to register for everything in one day. ?BRU can be overwhelming... focus on a few key items today and then add stuff online later. ?

Another tip someone posted a while ago is to register your due date about a month early... that way you'll get your completion coupon in plenty of time to go to the store and pick up anything on your registry that hasn't been bought. ?For that same reason... put ANYTHING you think you might need on there, so you can get them with the coupon at the end. ?

One last thing. ?Make sure you have a variety of items in all price ranges. ?Everything from $5-$10 to $100+. ?People need options.

    Have fun!?

  • Everything Jill said!

Definitely don't try to do it in one day!  Also, get the book Baby Bargains.  It really helped me decide on a lot.

I'm sure not everyone would agree with this, but the only thing(s) that we registered for that I wouldn't do again are the highchairs.  I love my highchairs, but we also eventually bought the Fisher Price booster seats for use at my mom's or out.  They are great, cheap, and do the same basic job as my high chair - plus, no cushion to wash.  If I had to do it over, I would just skip the high chair and get those.  Or at least make sure you add one to your registry!

I would love to see your spreadsheet too! Is there some way to post it on here? If not I can email you too I just didn't want you to be like omg who is this emailing me!

  • I read product reviews online and added the big stuff online first. Then I checked those things out in BRU to make sure I liked the way everything looked and felt in person.

For smaller things, try to bring a semi-new mom with you to sort through it all. That's what I did and it was amazingly helpful! (Make sure it's someone whose parenting style appeals to you.)

    Have fun!!

  • I have two pieces of advice: first, wear comfy showes and bring a drink! Seriously, we did one big trip (I just got too excited) but I was really exhausted by the end.  Second, determine how many people you might think will come to your showers and mulitply that by 3-5.  People like to buy a lot of little stuff and put it together and my mom won't stop getting little things from there once a week or so.  I'm glad that we have a lot of extras on the registry because I can't get her to wait to buy things until after the shower.  Have fun!

Absolutely!  Both of you (and anyone else!) can e-mail me and I'll send it to you.  It is an excel sheet, so I can't post it here.  :)

  • I definitely highly recommend Baby Bargains. I read that book cover to cover, and it helped me tremendously. I also did my initial registering online, and read a lot of the online reviews. My DH and I then went to BRU and looked at the big ticket items in person to make sure that we liked them.

I registered at BRU and Walmart because I had two seperate showers. One in NY (where I live) and one in PA (where I'm from), and there are no nearby BRU in PA. If I had only had one shower, I would have only registered at BRU.

When I was done registering I asked my SIL, who recently had a baby, to review it and to recommend anything I may have forgotten or to remove any unnecessary items.

    Have fun!! :)
