Ways to find a babysitter?

HOw did you all find babysitters when you had your first baby?  We don't really have neighborhood kids, and I don't want to steal names from friends in our neighborhood.  Did you use a service?  Craigslist?

We don't have any family here, so we'll end up relying on a babysitter quite a bit...but no clue where to start!

Any feedback is appreciated!

Re: Ways to find a babysitter?

  • we have family closeby, so most of the time we use them. I think it is ok to ask friends in the n'hood...chances are you may not need them the same time. I heard the local colleges have a list too...some of the sororities have a list of available sitters. I know Oglethorpe does and GA.State too. I think someone mentioned on here before that there are sitter sites that you could check out...good luck!!!

  • Try sittercity.com or care.com & your local church.
  • Definitely try the local colleges: I know one family who got ten-plus years of babysitters from Agnes Scott.  They kept on getting "passed on" through the students there.  The nice thing about the college kids is that when you call one, you have a good chance of getting somebody who can do it, because they can ask roommates or other kids on the floor if they aren't available.

Also try your local church, and you might try your daycare if you use one.  Sometimes daycare people moonlight as babysitters.

I wouldn't be afraid of asking the neighbors for referrals, either.  You can get some great sitters through that!

  • We use ladies through our daycare.  That is a great resource b/c your baby will already know them and it seems to make for an easy transition when you have to leave them with a babsitter.  But in the 15 months we have had Caroline we have only paid for babysitting 3 times.  We have had friends babysit and we take advantage of family when they are in town.  You will be surprised who will volunteer to babysit when you need one.

  • Same as Allison..we use our daycare people if it's gonna be a late night or we just use Cookie. :)
  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I'll ask the daycare - granted, it's in Roswell (by my office) and we are in Smyrna, but I guess you never know.  There are also a ton of churches around here and KSU isn't a bad idea either!

    Thanks again!

  • My friends have 2 GA Tech students that we all use. I don't tihnk it's wrong to ask your neighbors but most likely you will not have events on the same day.

Also Bailey's school gives out a list of teachers that will babysit. Thankfully two of his teachers are on the list so we plan to use them as well.

Another thing is my friends with kids all trade off date nights. So one couple will go one night and another will keep their kids then they trade off. This is the best b/c we don't pay each other. Babysitters can be expensive.
