Putting LO down drowsy but awake...how the heck!??!

this sounds pretty impossible for my kid...he's about 10 weeks now. if you put your LO down drowsy but awake, how in the world did you it? at what age? the only way we can put him down drowsy but awake is in the swing...but in the crib, HAHAHA!! riiiiiight...

  • If you figure it out, let me know! So far we can't do that.

I'm thinking that my DS needs to be a bit older for that to work.

  • We started this partly on accident at 6 weeks.  I set my LO down just for a minute to quick clean his room before bed, and he fell asleep.  It has worked for us ever since.

Our routine is, bath (3 times a week), diaper change, feed and then lay down.  We had to find the time that LO likes, it happens to be 8:30.  There are times when he will cry, then we try feeding a supp., diaper change and a slow rock and try again. I think it is all trial and error.

    Good luck to you.

  • It is actually kind of ridiculous, but it works for us.  We turn the swing on next to her crib with one of the sound features.  It is a swish swish sound.  We also have a cool mist humidifier running.  Both of these run all night.  Sometimes I will put her seahorse toy next to her crib.  It plays music for 5 minutes.  It is all about the white noise for us.  We do let her fuss it out, not cry it out, if she doesn't fall asleep.  This has been a huge success for us.  She started STTN last week too.  It also is all about consistency.  If he doesn't want to fall asleep try rubbing his back or side while he is in his crib for a while.  Just try not to actually remove him from the crib.  What time are you putting him down?  We usually have Brielle down by 8pm.
  • Yes, PP reminded me...white noise is key.  We run a cool mist humid. as well on high.  Also, we let him fuss it out as well, but lately he just falls asleep with no fuss which has been nice.
  • The key for us is catching her before she gets too tired.  At the first signs of sleepiness we put her down.  She lays in her crib a few minutes, occasionally talks a little bit and then drifts off to sleep.

We also follow the rule of no more than 2 hours of awake time between naps.  She usually shows her first signs of being tired between an hour and an hour and fifteen minutes of being awake.

  • Agree w/ PP...the key is finding the right bedtime, and the right routine. We switched ours to his crib at 6 weeks and it was magical. We have the FP rainforest machine that hangs on the side of crib, it has soft lights and music/rainforest sounds. The fan in his room is pretty loud and is good white noise (to think we were going to replace it until we realized what a great white noise it gave).

And then we got the routine down...he eats around 6, is fussy on and off for a couple of hours while we prepare and eat dinner (we take turns holding him and putting him in swing...whatever works). Around 8 we give him a bath (T, Th, Sa) and then massage. I dress him, feed him one last time in his room, swaddle, put him in crib with the machine on. It goes 12 minutes and he usually drifts off towards the end. I spend that time doing laundry and straightening his room so I can be nearby, or come get on the computer (office is across the hall).

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I cuddle her until she is obviously about to fall asleep the lay her in her crib. It took some time for her to get use to it but we stuck it out. Every once in a while she will fuss to be held again, but those nights are few and far between
