Calling on all moms!

I am in desperate need for some advice- my son is now 5 weeks old and has been diagnosed with acid reflux. The doc prescribed Zantac and know it can take a couple of days to work but I need some help while we wait so my husband and I do not lose our minds:)

He seems to cry all the time... And only wants to be held- any tips?

Also, he has been diagnosed with a herina in his groin, which the doc says does not cause pain- I am finding this hard to believe because my poor little guy always seems to be in pain. He will need an operation when he is alittle bigger- which has me incredibly nervous anyone else have experience with this?

  • Babywear. buy a sling and wear him. reflux usually works itself out when he gets a little bigger.

  • My son has reflux too and he would also scream for 6-7 hours every night. It's tough but all you can do is try to comfort them the best you can. It might be gas that is causing him pain too. Have you tried gripe water or gas drops? Hyland's also makes homeopathic colic drops and tabs that helps with digestion. When Jonah was really screaming, we would give them to him and they really seemed to help. We got them at the health food store. Good luck.

  • I don't know if you are BF or FF but if you use formula try changing it. I know they say that changing formulas doesn't help- but it does, it helped us a ton. You can try gentlease or some of the formulas for acid reflux or colic. My DD had acid reflux and a milk allergy so changing to soy formula worked. Also, I second gas drops or Colic calm and wearing a sling. Good luck.
  • Thanks ladies - I ordered the moby wrap last week and it just came tody! Hopefully that will give me a little more freedom:Big Smile

He is actually sleeping in his swing right now- ALLELIUA!!!

  • When ds was first diagnosed with reflux, they only way he would sleep was in his bouncy in his crib. You could try that or elevating his mattress. Have you tried decreasing the amount of oz he drinks? Fewer amounts, more bottles. Also, did the pedi suggest thickening his milk?
  • Hi...I am a NICU nurse and see tons of babies with reflux.  Try the swing, bouncy or carseat after feeds for at least 30 minutes (or anything upright).  It does improve with age so it WILL get better, also zantac can take up to a week to start working and it doesn't work for everyone.  It just neutralizes the acid, but it doesn't stop it from coming up into the esophagus.  Many people do find gentle ease formula helps, sometimes peds recommend AR or adding cereal to formula....we never do that in younger babies...to tough on immature digestive systems.  Hang in there!!
  • Oh, and we do lots of inguinal hernia repairs at work too....they're not painful and it's an in and out surgery if that makes you feel any better.

  • ally2158 thank you so much- I heard about the ceral my  MIL keeps telling us that but I was afraid of exactly what you said- too much on his little tummy. I just feel so bad for him- he seems so uncomfortable and really does not sleep!

Also, I am very worried about the hernia and am glad to hear that it is a more simple prodeure- Is it a laperscopy?

  • They can usually do it that way....I think it's only an overnight stay if at all.  Just for monitoring after anesthesia.  Hope your baby is feeling better!!
  • Reflux is often overdiagnosed, so when someone has a real serious case (like yourself and me, too!) it gets completely overlooked...

Some suggestions... if you are breastfeeding, be sure to keep the baby at a 45 degree angle to let gravity help. Gripe water can help with gas.

If possible elevate his crib mattress with a pillow  under the mattress

if you are comfortable, at 6 weeks we let Ethan start sleeping on his belly and suddenly he stopped screaming. It made a HUGE difference in his pain levels. It also helped correct some of the esophageal damage, which was causing him issues.

if you see no difference within 2 weeks with the zantac, prevacid was a wonder drug for us, I had a new baby after 2 weeks on prevacid. I also highly recommend getting the prevacid compounded, as opposed to the  solutabs. If you need info on a pharmacy that does this, I know of 2, one in doylestown and 1 in norristown. page me on SAIF or pm me and i can give you more info.

Sometimes people offer advice to let the baby sleep in the carseat, not only is this dangerous for choking reasons, but it can be downright painful for a reflux baby. The infant seat tends to make the baby's body curl up which puts pressure on the belly, which then pushes any acid up and since the baby is curled, it doesn't go all the way up, it gets stuck and caused even more pain... so that is bad advice! : )

if you are FFing, try enfamil AR or Similac sensitive RS, they both have added rice starch, which thickens the formula a bit, weighing it down to help keep it from splashing up and causing acid pain and spit up. IT is a much better solution than rice cereal in a bottle which is a bad idea all around.

It does get better, I swear! But it takes time and often some med changes...

My son was completely off all meds at about 11 months old..

  • Have you tried the "5 S's" from the Happiest Baby on the Block book?  I thought my son was in pain from digestive issues, but Dr. Karp's solutions worked like a charm for him.  His whole personality changed & I became a much happier mama!  The book is a fast read, but if you don't have time, you can google " the 5 S's" for the basics.
