Any MoMs that don't have a minivan??

My husband and I both own new Corollas and we cannot trade them in.  Financially it would be too much since we won't get what we own on our cars for a trade in.  So basically we will be taking two cars....everywhere. Anyone else have to do this for a while??

  • We have twins and a Camry and Corolla.  We hardly fit in the Corolla the way the carseats/carriers fit, but in a pinch we can make it work.  We have more space in the Camry, but would not attempt anything more than a short 2-4 hour trip in the car.  No space for all the babies' stuff, and their stroller takes up a good portion of the trunk!  We're looking at replacing one vehicle probably next year.

  • Honestly wouldn't work for me.  I have to be able to go places on my own with the kids. However, if this is all you can do then that's the way it is.  Keep in mind you will need help getting home from the hospital as you will not be able to drive yourself home.  Good luck!

You don't have to take 2 cars.  We have made 3+ years work with Honda Civics.  And we can travel more than 2 hours.  We just went on an almost week long vacation that was over 5 hours away.  We managed to bring all of our luggage, 2 PNPs, and 2 single umbrella strollers in one Civic.  Space has really never been an issue for us.  I crack up when people say they wouldn't be able to do it.  The only case I can see is if the parents are really tall when the car seats would be rear facing.  Otherwise, there is plenty of space!

I think they could make it work with twins, but I don't think there is any way they could get 3 car seats in the back seat for their triplets!  We have a older Lexus sedan and there is no way we could get a third seat in the middle.  The only way I could think of doing it would be to look into the convertible seat that you can supposedly get three across (Sunshine Radian?), but I can't imagine managing early on without infant seats!

  • I just got an Expedition XLT ( that's the REALLY big one) - I didn't want to put DD in a back seat since she's still pretty young and is kind of high maintenence in the car.  The Exp. works well for us and our needs right now, but I have to say that I did have the 2 backwards facing seats and one forward facing seat in my 4 Runner and it worked out great for the first year.  You will probably be able to fit all 3 seats backwards in the corolla, but it might be tough to do once they all face forward.  It was a tight fit for us, but DD just had to do with out her cupholder.

Not to be funny, but you might be able to appeal to the kindness of your local Toyota dealer and see what they can do for you - it never hurts to ask...

  • We have a Mazda 3 and an Expedition -- no minivan here.

  • Nope!  We have a Honda CR-V and a Honda CIVIC!  I have no idea what we are going to do because 3 carseats do not fit in the back of the Civic.  (our son is 2 and still in the convertible seat)  They barely fit in the back of the CR-V.

We just can't upgrade either of our cars at this point and will just have to make do.

In the event of an emergency situation and I have to take all 3 somewhere, I might have to put my older son rear facing in the front seat.  Other than that, I'll just have to take 2 at a time for now.

  • I feel better knowing I'm not alone!  Unfortunately we just really have to make do for now.
  • Our Kia Sportage fits 3 seats.  Check it out your car might.
