BF Question: Blood in milk?

Also posted on BF board...

So I'm a first time mom... Just had my baby on Monday.  My milk just came in yesterday and I noticed blood in my milk after trying to pump! Has anyone else had any experience of this?

Re: BF Question: Blood in milk?

  • We were never able to BF but I do know they say that some blood can be normal. If your nipples are dry they can crack and bleed and this transfers to the milk. Sometimes you might even find it in the baby's poop (the blood doesn't digest so it just passes through the baby).

If you start to see a lot of blood, I would talk to your OB.

  • your nipples could be cracking/dry... if you EP then try some nipple shields and most definitely get your hands on som Lansinoh [spelling?]...but its okay to feed your LO the milk even with the blpod in it, but if it becomes too much contact your OB. :)
  • Mine did this once right when my milk came in and I was extremely engorged. From what I understand its fine as long as you don't have the symptoms of mastitis. Just feed or pump enough to keep yourself from getting overly full and you should be fine. It just happened to me the one time and I haven't had any problems since.
