Speaking of breast milk...has anyone ever heard this?

My sister told me that her doctor suggested that she squirt some of her breast milk up my sick nephew's nose and on his eye (he had pink eye) and that this would help more than anything he could prescribe for her.

Apparently she did it, several times a day and his runny nose cleared up substantially  and his pink eye went away.  I was shocked.  Anyone ever heard of using breast milk as a healing agent?

  • Actually yeah... they talked about it at my breastfeeding class.  The doc teaching said if you get a scratch or something just wipe some breast milk in it and it'll heal up way faster.  It's supposed to be an awesome healing agent.  Crazy.  I don't know if I'd squirt it up a kid's nose though...
  • wow. Not that I heard of the BF daughter giving her dad who had cancer her milk and I am not sure if he was cured, but he improved.

  • Yes.  Many pediatricians will recommend it for a variety of ailments.
  • Yup.  BM is used for all sorts of home remedies.
  • Yep, it works.  Also, LO will get BM in their eye regardless.  It squirts everywhere in the beginning!
  • Yes I heard this before kinda weird but heard it actually works.
  • OK, so I just got this mental image of a lady walking up to a toddler/preschooler and trying to squirt breast milk up his nose....directly from the breast.

Cracked me up. People around here think I'm nuts, lol

I didn't know it was a healing agent, though. That's crazy! it's amazing what our bodies can do!

i think EFF touts it as a wonder drug and amazing all purpose cleaner too, right? Wink

  • Yep, it works. DS had pink eye right after I had DD. I didn't use the ladies as super soakers, though. I just put some into a medicine dropper and dropped it into his eye. Cleared up within a few days.

I guess my sister is just lazy.  She didn't take the time to get a dropper :)

Haha! My hand-eye coordination isn't the greatest, and I didn't think DS wanted a milk bath Stick out tongue

  • Yes, its true and it works. ?DS had a pretty bad cold at 2 weeks old and the pedi couldn't prescribe him anything since he was too little... so I squirted EBM in his eyes and nose and it was gone by morning. ?FYI - I didn't squirt FROM my boob like a previous poster suggested... I just dripped a little that I'd pumped.
  • haha! We should post pics of us trying to squirt our LO's after they come! That would give us all a good laugh
  • I must've missed this day during nursing school...I've never heard of this!

  • Yep, sure have!  BM has antibacterial properties, so it makes sense in a lot of situations.  DD had a rash on her face one day, I remembered the eye thing, and rubbed it on, and it was gone w/in an hour.

It's not a medical journal, but hey, it's free, it's natural... can't hurt anything, right?

  • Wow! I guess I did hear that when you are starting to BF if your nips are sore/red you should rub the milk on them to help them heal a bit until they become tougher but this is really amazing.
