Parenting after a Loss

Gagging While Eating

Hi Gals,

Anybody's LO have a problem with gagging while eating? Laynie is being bottlefed breastmilk and formula and often she gags while eating so much that she appears to be choking. It is really scary! We try to prop her up, we use Dr. Brown's slow flow nipple...any other suggestions? Is this normal?

Re: Gagging While Eating

  • Totally normal! But very scary isn't it? Cora would gag with the boob and bottles. It will get better as she gets older.
  • Loading the player...
  • my daughter does this (she has reflux & a milk allergy though).  If it gets worse or she starts vomiting, talk to your pedi about possible reflux.  good luck!
  • M would gag when the flow was to fast from the breast. I don't know about bottle feeding.

She'll get used to it eventually.

  • DD was/is a gagger too.  Even the wind blowing in her face used to make her gag!  It's definitely better now that she's older, but she isn't much of a solids food eater.  She makes a disgusted face at EVERYthing and has a hard time swallowing sometimes-- as if it tastes so awful she can barely muster up the guts to swallow!

But she's also in the 90th %'ile and loves her bottles, so as long as this doesn't lead to a picky toddler, we don't push it.

It's definitely scary to watch though!  Our pedi told us from the very beginning not to pay attention to the way babies breath while eating or sleeping because it is so sporadic and will scare you, even though baby is probably fine.  Easier said than done!!

  • Yup and I've been thrown up on a couple of times.  Its gross and scary but very normal.
