Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

anyone else having trouble cooking?

DS is literally on top of me the entire time I try to cook anything.  From when I open the refrigerator or pantry until he is in his chair with something to eat.

I used to just give him a snack while I did the prep work, and then we would play while everything was cooking.  Now, he throws a fit when I try to take him down after his snack.  He wants his whole dinner.

We haven't changed dinner time.

DH isn't home this month, so it's just me and DS at home right now, which might have something to do with it.

Does anyone else have this problem?  Any good solutions?

Re: anyone else having trouble cooking?

  • I have that problem too.  It sucks, doesn't it??  DH doesn't get home until 8-9 most nights so it's just me as well all day/night.  I try to prep whenever I can throughout the day--but like I tell my mom--it takes like 5 hours to make dinner!  I miss those old days in that way.

I've even tried getting up earlier to do 'prep' and also making more slow cooker meals.

  • UHG totally!  I'm into casserols and crockpot.  Stuff that can be prepped ahead of time and DD can eat for several meals so food is a microwave minute away.  Can you give him a snack if he's not in his seat?
  • I have one cabinet unlocked.  It's got some bowls and measuring cups that DS can play with.  This usually keeps him occupied for the whole meal prep.  We have a galley kitchen so his second favorite game is to push toys back and forth the length of the room.
  • Goodness YES! As soon as I get home from work, I start fixing dinner, and as soon as he sees me open the fridge, he has a fit. He thinks he has to eat RIGHT THEN!! DH doesn't usually get home until dinner is almost ready so that's no help. I usually end up giving him a snack, and when he's done, he asks for more...more...more...Usually I try not to give him any more, but sometimes I would rather give him more than to hear the screaming until dinner is ready.  Then of course he doesn't eat his whole meal because he's full on snacks.
  • DH does the cooking and he's home with her.  So many nights I'll come home to find him attempting to finish a meal and Lu has thrown every possible kitchen object she can find under his feet.  It's like an obstacle course.  But leaving her things to play with in the cupboards means she'll play while he cookes.
  • I can't do a thing in the kitchen with her around.  She throws a huge fit.

ditto this. i have 3 drawers and two cabinets with all kinds of kitchen utensils, pot holders, nesting bowls, etc.. all stuff she can't eat/choke on. she plays with "her" side of the kitchen all.the.time. I also started taking all the mixing bowls and big spoons out and dumping cheerios into each bowl. I showed her how to move the o's in and out with the spoons. She loves to play and eat, and 20 cheerios won't kill her dinner appetite. this will buy me maybe 20-30 minutes. hope this helps!

  • Yes, I have that problem and my DH is actually at home. She only wants me during that time right when we get home.

  • Yes!!!  And then when you do sit down you're so exhausted you want to cry, and the baby whines through the entire meal.  Oh the joys.  When DH was gone it was just me and I didn't even try after the first few weeks.  I just ate sandwiches and easy foods. Many times I'd just wait until she was napping or sleeping just so I could eat something in peace.  I'm pregnant so food is like my #1 priority!

I do have special toys for her that she can play with only when I'm cooking.   She also loves to unload the dishwasher (I just put some safe stuff in there and she pretends she's unloading it)
