Pregnant after 35

Need your opinion ladies...

I'll give you the short version of my baby making history...I had my first son at 28 yrs old. He is now 2.5 yrs old.  I unexpectedly got pg when DS was 11 months old and gave birth to a second son in January 2009.  I really really would love to have a daughter at some point but DH and I need a break and financially can't really do it for quite awhile. I am now 31.

So...if you were in my position, would you try for a girl at say, age 36 or so?

Honest opinions wanted!! TIA

  • Not to be too snarky, but this isn't the best board on which to post this question.  That's my honest opinion.  We are all over 35 and pregnant here.  Obviously, age is not a prohibitive factor for us.
  • Sorry ladies you are right.

  • Hmmm...  If your asking about being pregnant after 35, I don't see a problem with it (obviously).  Start TTC again when the time is right.  Maybe it will happen sooner than you think, financially.  Then again, maybe it will be another boy.  Usually nothing in life is that cut and dry and goes exactly as planned. • I'm 40 and just delivered a beautiful, healthy baby boy. I think you have plenty of time...
  • Don't let age be the deciding factor.  My OB told me that a pg woman in her mid 30s today is like a pg woman in her mid 20s 10 years ago.  We are much healthier now and are monitored much more closely throughout our pregnancies.  Try whenever you feel that you are financially able.

I'm 38 (37 when we conceived) and will be delivering any time.  I had a very uneventful/easy pregnancy and have no reason to think anything will be different the second time around.  We will start trying right around this time next year when I return to work.  The reason for the timing is because in order to be eligible for mat leave (1 year partially paid), I have to return to work for about 6 months.  That means if we conceive anytime after October 2010, then I will get my time in and still have baby #2 before 2011...that is assuming that we are able to conceive as easily the second time as we did the first.

Bottom line is do what feels right for you.

  • My doctor says "35" isn't really the magical number it's made out to be.   Maternal health and emotional readiness are more important factors in having a baby.  Congrats on your growing family!
