Fear: Vomiting during Labor

OK, how often does this happen? 50/50%?  I'll guess I have to deal--I've had some nausea during my 1st & 2nd tri but scared to have consistent nausea during labor.  Are there anti-nausea meds available?  Do they work? Uggh, I hate worrying about this but it's a fear I can't shake.

Re: Fear: Vomiting during Labor

  • I did vomit the WHOLE time. I'm not sure how many people do, but I know it's fairly common.  It wasn't the most pleasant but it was by far NOT the worst thing that happened during my labor.  eveyrone's labor is different.  No they did not offer me anything but I'm sure there is something to alleviate it...though I don't know that it would help.  Mine were caused by the intensity of the contrax, so it's not like drugs can stop that!  Good luck and try not to worry about things you cannot control.

  • I read a stat somewhere.  I think it's about 35% of women that vomit (and you're just as likely to vomit whether or not you eat).  FWIW I did not vomit and I did eat while in labor

  • Believe me, labor is not pretty. Vomiting is not the worst thing that can happen. Just sayin'
  • I think it's more than a 50/50 chance, alot more. But don't quote me.

Just eat light if you go into labor. I didn't eat anything at all for 18 hours but ended up puking 3 times. No big deal though, nurses are used to it.

  • I did not vomit nor did I feel nauseaus. In the middle of labor the whole nausea part is not something you will focus on.
  • I vomited after I gave birth, not during labor.

  • You probably won't even care anymore when the time comes. GL!
  • I almost did right after they gave me the epi and then again when I was pushing.

  • I vomited during my labor several times.  I ended up having a c-section as well and vomited during the begining of it as well.

  • I ate a huge spaghetti and meatball dinner before going into spontaneous labor and didn't throw up at all during my 20 hours of labor but I did feel nauseous a lot during labor. I had a barf-bowl on hand the whole time; I almost wish I did throw up because I'm sure emptying my stomach would have made me feel a heck of a lot better instead of having the food sitting in there the whole time!

Vomit pales in comparison to all the gunk that comes out of you when you give birth; my DH said it was the grossest thing ever, haha.

  • I didn't vomit or have any nausea, in fact I would have killed for a burger the entire 17 hours of labor. I ate everything they could offer me as soon as the kiddo was out. Man, was I hungry!!

  • All I wanted to do for two or three hours was vomit (I have Crohns disease and my body was flipping out during contractions) - I finally gave in to pain meds just so my body could relax enough to do so (because while trying to force myself to puke during a contraction, I strained a muscle). It was a huge relief. There are so many "worse" things that can happen than puking.

  • I threw up twice.  The nausea hit me fast and I threw up right away.  I felt fine again after I threw up.
  • I ate a HUGE pity myself for being 41 weeks pregnant dinner and went into labor 20 minutes later and boy did I vom BUT oddly, when I hit really hard labor the vomming actually helped alleviate some of the pressure of the contractions. Could just be me, but it actually helped. Plus there was so much else going on it really didn't bother me?
  • I threw up all over myself when I was pushingt had been 24 hours since I had eaten anything so it was basically just the ice chips. It was no big deal and they changed my gown and got me cleaned up super fast.

I vomited during my labor several times.  I ended up having a c-section as well and vomited during the begining of it as well.

this... i prob vomited at least 15-20 times no joke... it was about 3-4 times an hour- i actually did think it was awful (not meant to scare you) but it's honestly the part that i had the most difficutly with and is partly why i decided to throw in the towel and get a csection (that and they suggested the baby was too big- i was stuck at 9cm for many hours)- and the nurses said that the vomiting was actually a good sign and they were happy to see me vomiting!- it apparently meant that the baby was coming- i just remember telling my mom inbetween vomiting that "i just can't do this anymore...i cant vomit one more time" -i was in tears, and i didnt feel any contractions at all- i got to the point where i was just vomiting nothingSad

    - and i did vomit when they put me on csection table- they held a pan next to my head for a while then decided to just give me antinausea meds since i had been vomiting all day- and i hadnt eaten since the day before since i was induced!

i dont think its THAT common tho to puke as much as i did, so i wouldnt freak out and think that will happen to you- mine was prob an unusual case of it since i wast stuck at 9cm for so long! failed induction!

  • I threw up towards the end of my labor, while I was pushing, and I was in extreme back labor and the epi had worn off. I was vomiting because of pain. At that point I hadn't had anything to eat for 28 hours. I'm a nurse (not a L&D nurse though) and I know that there are meds that can be given for vomiting, but I don't know if they can be given while pregnant. I would assume so though.

  • I had no nausea during my pregnancy, but did vomit twice when delivering my first.  I vomited right off my bed onto the floor.  Thankfully, it wasn't much since I hadn't eaten in over 12 hours (induced).  Seriously...it was the last thing on my mind.  I just said, "whoops, sorry about that" and they were like, "no problem, honey, it happens all the time" and had it cleaned up just like that.  Don't worry about it - all YOU need to worry about is delivering your baby the best you can.

There are anti-nausea meds you can take, but I'm not sure how safe they are combined with other meds that you may need to have during labor and delivery.

  • I vomited once, right when my water gushed (it had already torn).  Shortly thereafter, I got pain meds, then an epi, it was blissful til the pushing started after that & I did not feel like vomiting.
  • I vomited right when I started pushing.  I guess the pressure on my stomach just made me have to get it out. It was no big deal, really.  I just didn't like the DH kept the bowl right under my chin in case I did it again and I kept having to smell it.  Ewwww
  • I didn't even get nausea at all, however, I did poop on the table. Just keep in mind that you will be going through so much that all those fears you have typically have no affect on you when you are in labor! GL!
  • I had 3 c/s's but threw up the entire time during all of them.  With DD2 I asked for nausea meds since I had horrible nausea before the surgery.  They told me they don't give nausea medicine since it makes the baby sleepy and they want the baby to be alert when it is born.

  • I threw up and I also had anti-nausea meds given to me

  • I had back labor so the pain was so intense before they finally got an anesthesiologist in to me that I was vomiting. Even though I was filling THREE of the spit trays at a time, honestly it was the easiest vomiting I have ever had. It just kinda came up. I threw up twice while it labor, and again in the operating room where I could barely move from all the tubes I had everywhere ( I was {--} that close to an emergency c-section). And each time a nurse was ready with plenty of pans and a warm wash cloth. Just warn them if you feel nauseous and the nurses will take really good care of you. Really its the least of your worries, and they'll put you on an IV if you start vomiting to keep you hydrated.
  • i threw up a lot during early labor and only once right when i got to the hospital.

before i even knew i was in labor i started throwing up and i got diarrhea at the same time. it was not pretty. i was sitting on the toilet and hugging a trash can. i hadnt even eaten much that day but i was assuming that whatever it was i ate had gotten me sick. i guess it was just my bodies way of cleansing itself before the delivery? once hard labor set in i didnt throw up and i didnt poop on the delivery table (that was my worst fear)

  • I puked as a reaction to the anesthesia medicine. It sucked but it was betterthan being in pain

  • I vomited right when he was born, my poor fiance, right after he cut the cord, I turned to look at him, and threw up all over his legs.... oops! Then again after they were done stitching me up. Honestly, after everything you go through, throwing up was the last thing I was worried about!

  • I got sick in early labor- I think it was a combination of nerves and contractions.

  • The only time I threw up was when I was ready to push.  I sat up and had a wave of nausea.  L&D nurse said it happens to a lot of women when it's time to push.  I threw up in a little jar that she handed me and that was the end of that.
  • I threw up once I got to 9 cms. Nurses said there is a nurve that the baby sometimes sits on right before they get to +1 station. Some people feel like the need to poop and some puke.
I puked 3 times (at least).

It wasn't the best part of labor, but it surly wasn't the worst..then again puking doesn't bother me too much.

Don't worry. You will be fine!

  • I vomitted while they were stitching me up from my c-section.  Just hit me all of a sudden hard... I was so tired (up for almost 3 days straight minus a few short cat-naps) and it was all I could do to turn my head to the side to get it into the bowl the nice nurse man was holding for me.  He quickly gave me some kind of shot into my IV and it stopped immediately.  Thank God. :)
