Update on search for flu vaccine - success!

I really appreciated all the suggestions you all offered for finding a place to get DD a seasonal flu vaccine given that her pedi's office has been out and doesn't seem to be getting any more.

I thought I'd share that we were successful in finding a Minute Clinic at a CVS in Allen that had received a shipment of vaccines, and more importantly, was willing to vaccinate an 18 month old.  One of the biggest problems we ran into was finding a pharmacy clinic that would administer the vaccine to little ones - a lot of the places we called said that kids had to be 3 and up, 9 and up, I even heard 14 and up at one point.

We ended up calling CVS' hotline, 1-888-FluShot, which has a nice feature of checking store locations with a Minute Clinic based on your phone number, so they tell you about the closest one first; if it doesn't meet your needs you can ask to hear about another one until you find one you want.  The 4th one I listened to said they had the vaccine AND would vaccinate 18mos and up, so I called them immediately and confirmed (DH had called one that said 18mos and up on the website and was told their policy had changed to 3 and up) and we went last night and DD, myself and our nanny all got shots.  We are so relieved and feel much better now that it's taken care of.

Anyway, I thought I'd share in case this helps anyone else who's having trouble getting a vaccine for themselves or their little ones.  I find it extremely frustrating that it is so difficult around here;  in talking to my mother last night she said that around her (in Ohio) they have them all over, so it seems like Texas just didn't plan very well and now we are all paying the price.

Re: Update on search for flu vaccine - success!

  • Our pediatrician told us to wait till they were in stock at her office and not to do it at a Minute Clinic, Walgreens, etc because of some of the additives.  I am curious to see what advice others are being given....she hasn't gotten any more flu shots in and I want Sophie  to have it, but also don't want the risk!

  • Glad you were able to find somewhere that had the shot available. I'm not sure about the differences of what is offered one place vs. another, but hopefully, they wouldn't be administering anything less than safe or effective.
