Nightlight and room sharing

We've had to take the nightlight out of DS's room during the day because he'll play with it sometimes. Lately, we've just forgotten to put it back which is fine because DS sleeps just fine without it. I think the nightlight was really more for us during the newborn period of nighttime feedings and changings. It was convenient because we had adequate light with the nightlight.

It's great that DS seems fine without it though, I like that we won't be encouraging that habit if he doesn't need it. However, when DS2 arrives we'll need light again during the night. They'll be sharing a room once DS2 is sleeping consistently, not STTN but just at a consistent routine. Prior to then he'll be in our room.

We have a dimmer switch in the room so I'm hoping we can just use that when needed. I tested it the other night when I checked on DS. I flipped it on slightly and he didn't stir. Granted, that's just a little light no crying baby in the crib next to him.

WDYT? How have you handled room sharing and nighttime feedings? If DC2's crying doesn't bother DC1, what about lights and your pressence?

Re: Nightlight and room sharing

  • My kids share a room (started about 3 months ago).  I leave their door open and if I need some light then I turn on the hallway light. For the most part DD stays asleep if DS wakes up at night (and vise versa)  My prblem is that DD is an early bird.  Wakes up at 5 a.m some times.

I have been considering getting a small lamp for their room to serve as a night light (cause we did get rid of the night light since DD would play with it).  But their room does not have a dimmer.  Installing a dimmer may seem light a better idea and since you already have one, then just go with that.

  • I posted about a cool nightlight in the this thread.  I am too lazy to go find the pic again lol.  It would work well because you could move it closer to the baby or carry it in there with you.
