Okay, I'm like the most liberal arts gal in the world. I took BS earth science to grad from college. But now, I'm in a position where I have to take these as prereq's for midwifery school and while totally excited, I'm also completely terrified.
Tell me a total liberal arts gal won't get chewed up and spit out in these classes?
Re: Did you ever take: Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Chem?
Took them all for nursing. I love A & P. I had a great high school teacher so I was well prepared for that. Micro and Chemistry didn't like so much. I just made sure to do any extra credit and got low A's or B's I think.
Try to avoid an accelerated class if you can. They cram so much in that it makes it not even worth it. Good luck.
lol - Me too. A&P courses were always my fav's.
I took one semester of chem and one of organic chem. I did great in the regular (inorganic) chem class because I liked that kind of stuff but I got a C in organic chem which I blame on my unwillingness to study and the fact that I have to think REALLY hard sometimes to figure out right and left LOL.
ETA: I have a liberal arts undergrad, but I'm pretty nerdy otherwise and if I had to pick a non-liberal arts major, I probably would have picked math.
Chem. *LOVED* it

I wish I could help you, but I ALSO took the BS Earth Science classes. We had to take two labs and a non-lab class. I took Weather & Science for one lab, Intro to Landforms for the second lab and my Advanced Placement Statistics from HS counted for my non-lab. I was a Fine Arts major though... for the first three and a half years anyway.
It. makes. me. nervous.
This is what I want to do. I'll make it work. I just want to know if I'm going to need study groups, tutors, etc!!!!
I've also had them all. It's really in the professor (at least for me) so do some research and see who is recommended if there are options. If you're taking this at a bigger name school you can check ratemyprofessor.com.
It will take work. I am not going to lie about that, but they were enjoyable for me esp Micro. =0)

as long as you are pretty good at math, you will be fine in chemistry. And you just have to study for a&p (it's all memorization for anatomy!) and microbiology is a lot of memorization as well. You have to remember the bacterias and such.
I think if you know how to study and enjoy what you are taking you will be perfectly fine. I wouldn't worry about a study group unless you start to feel uneasy about things in the class
Organic was a FT job. =0)

The whole study groups, tutors thing - well I prefer to study on my own rather than do a study group. A lot of those classes are straight memorization. I don't benefit from a study group in that case. I'm a re-writing my notes + flashcards + reviewing my notes kinda girl.
Most profs these days offer old tests to study from. I find that to be HUGELY helpful. I hope yours do that!
Oh and usually I study from their powerpoints and tests. Depending on the prof, there is truly no need for the book - but that's highly dependent. Still annoys me to shell out the $$ for a book when we never need it. ;-P
Apparently you missed my post last night asking if Sylvan Learning Centers will tutor adults in Math - HAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAH
Oh god, I'm screwed! LOL
lol. yeah...i missed that post! If I remember right you really only have to know basic math. But if you aren't comfortable doing it I would totally join a study group!
I had to take A&P 1 and 2 to graduate, and i HATED every second of it. I worked my butt off, studied all the time, joined every group i could think of for help, and even spent a lot of extra time with the instructor. i coasted out with a D in both. luckily for me, D = diploma.
I'm sorry for you :-( i almost changed my major b/c of those classes.
I got an environmental and population biology degree and intended to go to pharmacy school before I got married....so yes, taken them all.
I loved anatomy, rouge memorization. Physiology, loved (except for the vivisection on the rat). Microbio, I took many variations of this and LOVED it. But that's my thing, I could spend my life taking biology courses Chem and I didn't get along so well, but I think if I went back now...in a different mental state, I'd be great at it.
You'll do great! It sounds like lots of fun!

DS #3 diagnosed at birth with panhypopituitarism - lack of pituitary function. He is treated with thyroxine, hydrocortisone, growth hormone and testosterone.
I was a biochem major, so I had them all.
In several of my classes, there was a woman that was taking them to get her teacher certification. Based on that, as long as you put in the work, you will do fine
I actually found chemistry and anatomy to be A LOT funner than Earth Sciences. This was HS though (I went to a conservatory... no sciences for me!). A lot easier, too. I basically flew through chemistry without a problem.
Though, more then the subject, I think the teacher play a big role in a class being enjoyable or horrible. So ask around at your school (if you have the option) and pick the best teacher.
Well, I'm another person with a nursing degree. Didn't mind A+P, though it wasn't easy by any means. Dissecting a cat, not my favorite. The smell of formaldehyde made me sick after a while...
Microbiology class was terrible - I didn't have an accelerated class exactly, but we only met once a week, so there was a lot of info crammed into 3 hours each thursday night... My teacher was old and dry and somewhat boring, and his tests were super hard. The lab was really fun, though... I loved growing bacteria and staining slides and stuff. Super cool.
I only had to take basic chemistry... not really anything more difficult than I did in highschool.
I was a single mom (20 years old) with a toddler in nursing school and lived 4 hours away from my family. I have no idea how I did it, but I am certain you can do it too!!!
It will be work, but you can do it. Like the PP said, do NOT get behind.
For A&P, I had multiple sets of (color coded) flash cards that were stored in numerous locations. One of those sets lived in the bathroom. Odd, I know. BUT, you need to take advantage of every spare second. There is a TON of memorization, and it doesn't happen on accident. You must apply yourself to the task. I spent an average of 40 hours a week on A&P for an entire year, and finished the classes with a 98%. It is possible.
