Preemies

H1N1 -anyone else not doing it?

Our pediatrician said he would not give it to his own children (including his former preemie), my brother who is in his residency specifically called me to tell me not to do it and 2 other specialists said no way....Are others getting this same reaction?

To be honest I had not planned on doing it, but was also not dead set against it either.  Just seems strange the negative response that is out there toward the vaccination.

Re: H1N1 -anyone else not doing it?

  • I am completely torn about it...but I think I might choose not to just because my little one is not in daycare we have no other children. I do go to school part-time on campus ( full-time student although taking 2 online classes and 2 on campus). I was thinking of cooking thanksgiving dinner for my husband and I here at home and having no people over just our first thanksgiving as a family on our own. Same for X-mas.

  • I'm not getting it.  We're at high risk for delivering early and there is no way I'm going to inject a vaccine that is brand new into my body, knowing it will affect my son.  My OB hasn't even mentioned it, but my peri laughed when I asked him about it.  We have dealt with SO much during this pregnancy, we are not going to venture down that road...
  • I've gotten the exact opposite reaction - everyone of Olivia's doctors have said that if we want to get it we can (the issue is more about availability).

Did they give a specific reason not to get it?

  • my lo doc said not to get it and I am not getting it either
  • Basically for the sickest babies/children some of our docs think it is a good idea to get the vaccine.  Just because of their prematurity, if they are otherwise very healthy they are not recommending it.  I should also say that our ped and many of the docs here in Colorado are very conservative about vaccinating (which I appreciate).  Our ped said that it is simply too new and probably not necessary.

I just called the pulmonologist that we saw when Hudson had a wheeze at Children's Hospital.  I left a message for her, but was able to speak to the nurse.  I asked her if they were recommending the vax and she said only to certain high risk cases.

  • Why do they say not to get the vaccination?

In our state, people are dropping dead from H1N1. The last number I heard was 40 in the last 2 weeks. That's fuking terrifying to me. Unless somebody can give me actual information instead of hysteria about why to not vaccinate, we have every intention of vaccinating our entire family.

  • One doctor told me it was unnecessary, and the others told me to get it.  I hate how everyone is so divided and I wish there was a clear answer!

I think this is a great point. I feel like everyone who is against it doesn't really have a legitimate reason, it's all hysteria and hearsay. We'll be getting it if we can.

This is also my rationale for deciding to get the vaccination.

  • Every practitioner I've dealt with since DD was born - nurses, neonatologists, pediatricians, and my midwife - has strongly encouraged me, DH and DD#1 to get the shot ASAP.  We'll all be getting the vaccine.
  • definitely NOT doing it.
  • We're not doing it because even if we get past all the mass hysteria on both sides of the fence over this vaccine, there aren't really available where I'm at. Plus, I'm not subjecting my kids to standing in long lines with germy strangers. People are always throwing themselves in the faces of my kids because they are twins so no thank you. We'll just stay in our house again this winter.
