3rd Trimester

What is the furthest you would travel at 38 wks?

I'm so torn - my grandfather's 90th birthday is this weekend, but it's at least a 2 hour drive from my hospital.  And that's without traffic - with traffic, it can be up to 3 hrs.  I'm debating on whether or not I should go.

My doctor said it should be fine, but that if I have any signs of contractions, I should turn around immediately and come home.

  • When I'm 39 weeks, I have to travel about an hour away from my hospital, and I'm not too excited about it. So I guess that's got to be my limit. But I am also a nervous nelly.
  • I've been limiting myself to 1-2 hours and like your Dr said, if I feel consistent contractions, I turn around. I've had many false labor signs. Hmm...maybe if I go further I will actually go into labor...
  • I am traveling about 3 hours away when I'm 38 weeks.  A very good friend is getting married.  My doctor said it's fine, but if contractions start, to just come home.  I'm not too worried about it.  GL!
  • I'm going to stay close to home around that time, but that's really tough.  Grandpa's 90th birthday, that only comes around once.

I think I'd try and make it to his birthday, but pack my hospital bag with me just in case.  Everyone tells me you don't want to go to the hospital too early anyway so spending 3 hours in the car probably wouldn't be too bad.

  • I went to a Navy Ball 2 hours away this past weekend (at 38 weeks) and stayed overnight. I just made sure I knew where the closest hospital was in case something should happen.
  • My OB said not to travel further than 2 hours from the hospital starting at 37 weeks.

  • I probably wouldn't go much further than an hour away, but if it was my Grandfather's 90th birthday I would make an exception. It would also depend on what had been happening at the last appointment. If I was dilated, having contractions, mostly effaced etc. it would change my mind about whether or not I was going to go.

  • We are self-imposing a 1 hour limit on travel after 37 weeks... my doctor is also taking me out of work at 36 weeks because I commute an hour and a half each way.

However, if I were close to my grandfather, there wouldn't be much that could keep me away from a 90th birthday party for him. My doctor told me that worst comes to worst, if I end up going into labor while still working, I would just have to have the baby in another hospital.

  • I would do that, but I would probably need a few stops to pee and walk around.  Honestly, I don't think it's that big of a deal.  You don't need to rush to the hospital immediately if you go into labor anyway and it's not like you're suddenly going to be in transition after 3 hours if it's your first baby.
  • The mailbox... I wouldn't do any unneccessary walking more than 10 minutes
  • I was going to say 2 hours.  I think what your doctor said sounds sensible.
  • With my first I probably would have, because I assumed I'd have a long labor. But with my first two kids my water broke. One a slow trickle, but one was a dramatic gush that wouldn't stop and started severe contractions immediately less than 5 min. apart. This was at 38 wks and 3 days. It was a back labor and I barely made it the 10 min. in the car to the hospital. So, having experienced this I would not travel more than a few min from home after 38 weeks.
  • My doc asked me to stay about an hour from the hospital.  My family is 2 hours away and she asked that I not go OOT for Thanksgiving or my cousins wedding (at 28 weeks).
